This is a very short but charming story. Two well meaning passers by find an unfortunate victim of a traffic incident. Their reaction is a thought provoking exploration of what happens to us after we are gone. It is told in kind, sensitive manner and would be a good way to introduce young ones to the idea that we are not here forever. The end of the story lets your imagination work a bit. This serves to make the story more universal and appealing. While it seems to have been written for small children I found it moving nonetheless.

The Flat Rabbit

A cute little dog
And his friend that's a rat,
Find a motionless rabbit,
On the road lying flat.

Compassion kicks in
Oh what should be done?
They can't leave her there
Lying still in the sun.

They converse and they puzzle,
An idea they create,
They work through the night
Deciding her fate.

They carefully scrape up
The rabbit's remains
And attach her still body
To a kite's wooden frame.

They rescue the rabbit
And treat her with love,
They fly her kite high
O're the city above.

"The Flat Rabbit" is gentle,
A story with heart,
Respectful and caring,
Towards those who depart.

So talk with your kids,
Everything has a season...
Help them to know,
Help them to reason.

And when the time comes,
With death they must deal
They will understand,
They will know how to feel.

The illustrations are created with pen, ink and watercolours and the colour pallet is muted and limited to pale blue, rosy pink and tan, with very minimal text. The story themes are friendship, compassion, working together towards a common goal, problem solving, doing what's right and respectful, and coping with a death (even if it's a strangers.) I highly, highly recommend his book.

Sensitive and real. The animals in the book show love and respect for their dead friend and create a beautiful solution for their feelings and concerns.

We have found Scandinavian books for children about death a bit more direct than American sensibilities. There was a book in Norway called 'The Children's Undertaker' which was quite direct in it's approach to the death of a homeless child, though it was respectful to the child. This book approaches the topic of death with cleverness, but not the usual way of responding to an animal that has died.

I am not sure about rating the story vs the actual book, because I would give it 4 stars since the dust cover was crumpled on the edges and had black marks on it. Aside from that, the story and illustrations were good.

Great book for opening a conversation with little ones about death and the afterlife. Written with a gentle sense of humor. recommended. I love kids books that open the door to questions and deeper conversation. This is one of those books.

Great book dealing with a difficult subject. I told my 4 year-old sons the rabbit didn't look before crossing the street & it's a good way to emphasize why kids have to be careful around streets.
