Covers collections are a tricky business. At their best, they can reveal new facets of an artist as he or she spins an original and personal take on favorites from another songwriter's catalog. At their worst, they can be flat and uninspired. I have heard both so am typically wary of clicking the "purchase" button before I have read reviews or listened to samples. However, since Mike is one of my favorite artists, I decided to take a leap on faith on this one.

So to sum it up, good decision, Mike brings it as usual. One thing that works for me is that most of these songs, although great (Cheap Trick and Thin Lizzy particularly) are not very familiar to me, so I don't have the context of the originals getting in the way. Most of these could just as well be Mike originals as far as I am concerned. Also, Mike adds his characteristic raps to the existing material, for example on John Denver's "Sunshine" which opens the album. This keeps the covers fresh and puts his unique spin on them. Mike also keeps us guessing as to what's next, singing in French on one song and adding a couple little instrumentals including a somberly-strummed "Send In The Clowns." "Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat" is funny and goofy, a welcome interlude between more serious songs. The highlight for me here is the song that was most familiar for me to begin with - "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Mike's version is soulful and rhythmic, adding another layer of depth to a treasured old classic. If you only want one song from this collection, I'd suggest this one. "Southern Girls," btw, is a close second.

The album does drag a little towards the end with a few tracks that are uncharacteristically somber. But that's just a matter of taste for me.

"The Flip Is Another Honey" veers all other the map, as Mike Doughty covers all manner of songs, stamping his own interpretation and twists to them. Tracks range from the excellent rocker Jimmy Bell to the smart rap remake of Sunshine to show tunes such as Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat to, alas, a pair of Cheap Trick covers and throwaways like Fanfare and Send in the Clowns. The problem is that some of this mix is just not that interesting or novel to merit reworking. Take Me Home Country Roads just makes me like the original even less (wishing I had not had to hear this song ever again, and others, such as Boy + Angel are so close to being the kind of insprired remake that makes covers fun, but in the end just falls short.

I've often felt mostly solo albums where one musician handles pretty much everything sound a bit flat. That syndrome creeps into some of these songs, too, where the music just does not have the energy and tension that come from collaboration. To be sure, this is an interesting album with some strong tracks, but overall it falls a bit short. (BTW, the title comes from a DJ's remark about the "A" side of a Jerry Lee Lewis single from back in the '60s and it deserves kudos for cleverness.

Not bad for M Doughty, but could be better.
I enjoy listening to all the songs with some sticking in my head more than others.
Being comprised of cover songs, they are actually decent.
I would recommend this album at the low price.
Especially if you enjoy his music style.

While I certainly enjoy Mike Doughty's music, I would rather hear original works than covers. About 80% of this album is good, but a few of the songs I just don't like or don't listen to.

The CD seems to be ok. Not as good as Skittish, Rockity Roll, or Haughty Melodic but it's still Mike Doughty and needed to have it in the collection

Mike Doughty delivers another great album with Flip. Mostly covers, although you may not realize. Most are typical Doughty jams with elegant lyrics.

Everything he touches is gold, duh.

I really dig "Sunshine". While it's not a traditional cover, it uses a lot of samples and the vibe is irrepressible. I also like "Tightrope". Never heard the original, but what a great track! I'm usually not a fan of covers (especially cover albums), but this may change my mind. Thanks, Mike!
