""Several times a month, particularly along Florida's Gulf Coast, the opportunity presents itself for observation of a timid product of sunset known as the Green Flash--a momentary flash of green light that appears on the horizon just as the Sun's orange disk disappears at sunset.""

About the Author

Elinor De Wire has been enamored with the sky and all it contains since she first looked through a telescope at the planet Saturn. An avid amateur astronomer, she served on the staff of the Mystic Seaport Planetarium from 1988 to 1994, writing and producing programs, teaching astronomy courses, and lecturing. She has authored numerous articles on astronomy and often features sky topics in her newspaper column, "Shore Almanac." Her three children’s books—Journey Through the Universe, Activities for Young Astronomers, and Reach for the Sky—are used in schools throughout the nation. A former resident of Florida, Ms. De Wire now watches the stars over her home in Seabeck, Washington.

More About the Author

Elinor DeWire has been researching, photographing, and writing about lighthouses since 1972. She has visited more than eight hundred sentinels in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, and Australia and is the author of eighteen books and more than 250 articles on the subject. Former Coast Guard historian, Dr. Robert Scheina, calls her "America's most prolific lighthouse author and a driving force behind the recent upsurge in interest in preserving lighthouses and the history and nostalgia surrounding them." DeWire has been honored for her work by the U.S. Lighthouse Society, the American Lighthouse Foundation, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the National League of American Pen Women. Two of her books have won the coveted Ben Franklin Award and the Coast Guard Book Award. DeWire also has written three books on amateur astronomy. If you have ever been interested in knowing more about the night sky (especially if you live in Florida) this is your book. It is creatively written, full of interesting facts, photos and diagrams. Each chapter has great quotes regarding the skies from famous persons (such as Michelangelo and Robert Frost.) It is at once simple and clear (in explaination) but also complex enough for any amateur star gazer. Ms. De Wire has done her homework as well as her telescopic work. If you'd like to study constillations, learn more about planets and the sun and moon and stars and much more amazing sky-related information, I think you'll really appreciate this book. It's interesting to read, well written and cleverly put together. It's a great reference book, and something unique you'll want to hold onto.

Found this book at the library and loved it. I ordered my own copy so that my Florida guests could enjoy and learn about our unique and lovely place in the cosmos. After vacationing here for 17 years and always looking for the fabled "Green Flash", I finally recognized one. Thanks to a picture in this book I knew what to look for.
