About the Author

A professor emerita of German at the University of Delaware in Newark, Trudy Gilgenast has lived and studied in Germany. Reared in a bicultural family, she became intrigued by the way German customs and recipes were passed from generation to generation. This book is the result of her detailed oral histories compiled both in Germany and around her Wilmington, DE home.

I was glad to see that this book is still in print. It was the first of many German cookbooks I have
purchased, written in English. I will be buying a few of these as hostess gifts to give to the spouses of the Germans that participate in our dinner club. It is so much more than a cookbook, you'll enjoy reading the proverbs and the traditions.

Wonderful book that will help me try to make some of the food my family and I enjoyed during our eight years living in Germany. The customs and stories made me "homesick" for the wonderful country I miss very much.
