Book Description

May 12, 2011
From the start, Truth about Trade & Technology has spread its message of hope and growth. We began a weekly column, produced a weekly economic analysis, launched a website, spoke to journalists, appeared on radio and television, and attended meetings in the United States and abroad. More than a decade later, we can report many successes, such as the passage of new free-trade agreements and the growing acceptance of biotech crops. Yet plenty of tests await us: Agricultural trade remains badly distorted and biotechnology continues to face substantial resistance in Europe and many developing nations. As old battles end, new ones emerge--and our work remains as important and daunting as ever. The Food Security Reader is a chronicle of what we’ve done, a collection of our best columns on a wide range of subjects. Contributors include Michael Allen, Jeff Bidstrup, Mary Boote, Gilbert Arap Bor, Tim Burrack, Reg Clause, Maria Gabriela Cruz, Rosalie Ellasus, Bill Horan, Ken Kamiya, Carol Keiser-Long, Dean Kleckner, Cheryl Koompin, Rajesh Kumar, Darrell McAlexander, Jim McCarthy, Paul Rasgorshek, John Reifsteck, Tim Recker, John Rigolizzo, Jr., Ted Sheely, Al Skogen, and Terry Wanzek

5.0 out of 5 stars International Ag Trade June 12, 2011
By Clayton
This is a common sense discussion of what the food security issue is really all about. Too much of what is written on this subject has an emotional bent designed either to sell a point of view or generate media attention. Mary Boote simply tells it like it is, with a positive, optimistic tone that is often absent these days.

Ms. Boote and Dean Kleckner, who wrote the Foreword for this book, are both from Iowa, and folks in that state know agriculture, for they live it every day. They're also highly dependent on international markets, so they know and understand global issues as well as domestic ones. It behooves us all to pay attention to what they have to say.

Clayton Yeutter, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

5.0 out of 5 stars An informative and important read! July 21, 2011
In spite of advances in technology, ranging from mechanical equipment and improvements in weather prediction to better, genetically engineered plants, farming still remains a difficult undertaking. The various articles in this volume clearly and honestly convey those travails and the issues that are important to the continued success of American farmers. A common thread is that public policy -- the regulation of genetically engineered crops, for example -- is too often unscientific and unconstructive.

This book should be widely read -- especially by those who are ignorant about farming, such as urban dwellers and members of Congress and their staffs.
