Action takes place in Boston, 1769.

This book has a good romance, good adventure & a witty page-turner. Hero Quincy ( a sea captain)lives in
Boston & fakes Tory sympathies. He pretends to be foppish about clothes, wigs, etc. He loses all but one
wig during the story. His father lives in England & appears never satified. Quincy's Uncle Edward is more
like a Dad to him. Together they own/ operate Stanton Shipping. The ship, The Forbidden Lady, was Edward's
tribute to his unrequited love Mary. Who is aunt of our heroine.

Our heroine, Virginia, is from NC, & living for now with her widowed Aunt Mary & heroine's sister. "Ginny"
& family spy against British, mostly overhear comments at parties etc. She considers Quincy a rude, pompous
fool, until she witnesses his bravery. He turns out, willing to 'risk all' for heroine.

Quincy is claustrophobic about- small spaces & Ginny about fires. Edward & Mary were sweet & fiesty together-
would have liked to read even more about them.

I've never read this author before but I did hear about her and when the opportunity struck for me to sample her with her début book, I took it. Now that I'm done with the book, I can only say...HOLY COW! If all of her books are half as good as this one, I have misd on some great writing.

Originally published by Forge Books in 2002 under the title of `For Love or Country' this book is now offered to us through HarperCollins Publishers and I have no doubt finding new fans all over the world.

The above blurb is from the original book which is still sold through Amazon and I like it better than the one from the Avon blurb because it conveys more of what the story holds and it has a better hook.

Where do I start with my praise of this story? Should I tell you first how much in awe I was of its writing or with plotting? Both were exceptionally good for one's debut. Or should I tell you how good and wonderful the love story was?

I honestly fell in love with the hero. Quincy Stanton epitomized the good guy and his characterization, actions and the words coming out of his mouth was so well done that he may as well been alive, standing right in front of me. I fell for him hard! Almost as much as he did from the moment he laid his eyes on Virginia Munro, the smart and sassy woman who was a torn in his side he'd rather keep there. The scenes between the two were witty, sensual and just ... priceless.

If you're in a rut and can't seem to find a new book out there to satisfy you, you should give this `new-old' book a try. It will satisfy all the bones in your body; while tickling your funny bone, it will melt your heart with its love story and in process satisfy your adventuress heart with its cloak and dagger spy take on Bond stories.

I had a little trouble getting started on this one, but stuck with it and the book and my efforts paid off. I really enjoy early American Historical Romances. This one just finally kicked right in and fed my imagination. I felt the fear when the girls and Aunt Mary decided to spy for the Union, and laughed at the messes they ended up in. Fell in love with the Tory and the Patriot as that love triangle began. Stressed out when the spying was discovered and then just heaved a sigh of relief when then turned out the way they did. Good read, Great job Kerrelyn Sparks.

This book was a surprise. Hadn't read her historic novels, just mostly vampire genre. However, I really liked the dialog, quick and funny. Thoroughly enjoyed this book

Great romance. Sparks has successfully broke away from her vampire novels and written some great historical romance! Basic plot is predictable (spoiler, romance novels have a happy ending) but the characters and their antics keep you hooked and wanting more.

First of all, The Scarlet Pimpernel is one of my favorite story lines of all times. As a novel it could be a tad tedious, but I think I've watched every movie rendition that was ever made. So when the author says that she modeled The Forbidden Lady after The Scarlet Pimpernel, I admit I am predisposed to like a story.

If you've never read a historical romance this would be a good one to start with. I don't think historical is this author's primary genre, so she writes with a more characteristically modern feel. To me, The Forbidden Lady combines the "perkiness" of a typical regency but with a little more rational thought. (I can't be the only one who thinks the English aristocracy of the 19th century had to be one of the most contrived societies in history.)

I also loved how she wove historical events like the Boston Massacre into the story. Some of you who are sticklers for historical accuracy might need to curb your instincts. I didn't bother mapping out the timeline to assess the accuracy of every detail, but the language is clearly more modern. Not sure when "oops" was first used, but pretty sure it was sometime after 1775. Plus, some of the humor relies on sexual innuendo that requires an understanding of fairly modern colloquialisms. That did not affect my appreciation of the story or the author's style at all.

I would classify the heat level as spicy. There are some fairly explicit scenes, but they don't drag on and on, and the emphasis remains on the relationship between the hero and heroine. All in all, I would say this one is definitely worth reading.
