Better start reading "Forest of Assassins" early in the day since you won't be putting it down. David Forsmark delivers an exciting, insightful narrative characterized by compelling conviction, abundant detail and rare precision. It's an outstanding example of "non-fiction fiction", recommended for style as well as substance.

A tremendous adventure story, Forrest of Assassins is one of those books you just don't want to put down. Dirty, deadly, and pushed to the limits of human endurance - Hank and his fellow SEALs deal with fighting one of the most unconventional wars in American history. Not only is this book an excellent read, but it is well written and very informative. An attention grabber from the very start, FoA is a riveting story about a group of brave men who face monumental challenges. I would recommend this book to all readers, regardless of military background.

I have given few 5 Star ratings in my review of books, this one was easy. There were numerous editing errors throughout the book, but they did little to detract from the riveting story line. Albeit "fiction", the story tells of the role that Navy SEALS played during the Vietnam War. Until recently, most of the heroic' s and clandestine operations had been credited to the Special Forces, SOG, and LRRP' s. We knew that SEAL' s were present through out the conflict, but little about their operations. The book weaves personal stories into the larger tapestry, and the reader is treated to the humanist side of the War (both the good and the "dark side"). Most who served in Vietnam had some degree of interaction with the Vietnamese people and not all of it was bad. The side story of the relationship with the Catholic orphanage and the Nun who ran it, is just such story and played out in many places. The support of schools, orphanages, and

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I thought it was well written and presented the time leading up to the Vietnam War very well. The story told a very believable story about the life of a Navy Seal leader and his team along with Yards and Vietnamese working covertly gathering information and carrying out missions against the North Vietnamese. As a retired Marine Corps officer who served in Vietnam among other places I very much enjoy reading books about both factual people and events and also novels about war when they are well written. I am very familiar with most of the places described in the book around Da Nang. This book is a worthwhile novel to read and it is a real bargain at .99 cents.

A great piece of "fiction", crafted by a writer with a very real sense of what things were like in-country in the 60's. Also adds a missing piece to the Maddox and Turner Joy puzzle, although a Radarman friend of mine aboard the Maddox tells a slightly different story. The pieces still pretty much fit. Different versions of the same incident rarely fit perfectly.

The details around Vung Tau and Cat Lo are spot-on also. I could read this and still smell the place.

One of the best pieces of "fiction" of the era, and I've read most of them. Highly recommended.

The Forest of Assassins combines the best of several worlds. An excellent Historical Novel, an action tale and a mystery.

It follows the story of a Navy Seal team in 1964 Vietnam conducting operations before and after the Gulf of Tonkin incident to frustrate the NVA.. Forsmark & Imholt introduce us to the realities that our team must deal with regularly:

The reality of A life spent life 10,000 miles from home and family in a different culture & climate, which is painted in beautiful and vivid colors by the authors in chapter after chapter.

The reality of A South Vietnamese government with issues of both corruption and competence that our storytellers keep before us as the service men deal with them as needed and required but not as desired.

The reality of a Drug Trade which becomes both a small subplot and the web that weaves parts of the story together.

The reality of combat, this is the real star of the book, Forsmark & Imholt give you the actual feel of battle and keep you on the edge during it..

And if that isn't enough to give Navy Lieutenant Hank Dillon and his friends a headache lasting all day long add an informant within the ranks that is putting every mission they goes on it jeopardy, it's a whodunnit that keeps you guessing till the very end.

Add to that a few subplots and a touch of comedy involving Nuns & MP's (but not together) and you have a book that you will enjoy from cover to cover.

What gives it four starts instead of five? I really felt this book would have been better as two with a bit of a cliff hanger but the problem becomes where to divide it?
