Editorial Reviews

★★★★★ "I've never read an indie author. Until now. So imagine my surprise when I found Isaac's The Forever Gate was not only not sludge, it was pretty darn good." -

★★★★★  "I normally go for established authors.. this time, however, I got my hands on a short novel by indie author Isaac Hooke, called The Forever Gate, and I am very glad I did.  I found myself immediately sucked in to the narrative. I actually enjoyed the story so much that I felt like giving it a bit of publicity." -

★★★★★  "The Forever Gate is a fast-paced, thoughtful, and extremely well-written foray into the F/SF genre. I highly recommend this book and immediately bought the sequel upon completion." - WJ Davies, author of The Runner and the forthcoming Binary Cycle

★★★★★  "Every chapter has something suspenseful happening, making the book very hard to put down, and Isaac's writing style flows like few others. To top it all off, the editing was superb. There's a lot to admire about his books. I was never bored or disappointed." - Jasper Scott, author of Escape and the Mrythdom Cycle

★★★★  "The author does a good job of quickly getting you into the heads of the characters and feeling like you are right in the middle of it." - Michael Gallagher (AMAZON TOP 10 REVIEWER, HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)

★★★★  "A great beginning... full of tension and intrigue. Well written, prose that was easy to read and had a nice sense of flow." - R. Nicholson (AMAZON TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

From the Author

What is your story about?
At its heart, The Forever Gate is about a man haunted by something that happened to his family, and how he comes to terms with it. He learns not to be so self-centered, and that there are larger problems beyond himself. The story is set in a far future that seems to resemble the middle ages.

What has been the most rewarding part about creating this story?
Definitely the knowledge that I'm bringing a new world to life, and sharing it with others. I love sharing my deepest thoughts and insights with readers, stripping away everything to show them who I am at the core, minus all the social masks and pretenses. I want the readers to get in my head a little bit, and see what kind of twisted thoughts and ideas are floating around in there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Good Read January 3, 2013
By Leslie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a thrilling combination of "Running Man" meets "The Matrix"! It is nearly impossible to write about without giving something away.

The pace is fast, the action intense, and the writing is strong. Hoodwink is a very sympathetic character, and the author gives us just enough background to develop him a little more fully. There is a great balance between Hoodwink being hunted and fighting for survival and Hoodwink coming to grips with his inner demons that keeps the book interesting on a variety of levels.

The story has a number of twists and turns, super-human feats, and close calls -- everything a good action story should have, while also creating a world for us that oozes dystopian desperation.

While not part of this story, the author offers a snippet of the upcoming sequel at the end of "The Forever Gate". It was a wise move on his part. The sequel looks even more interesting, and I look forward to reading it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great start for Hooke! January 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. Although not my usual reading style this story had me completely hooked. The author's style is light, and yet, immersive, and very enjoyable. Hoodwinked, the main character, is a riot (in a good way of course!) The only way this work could've been better would be a bit longer in length. But I can say in all certainty, it is worth the price, and, I am very patiently waiting for the next installment of the story!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's worth a look March 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would have given it another star but for some unnecessary course language. What I like best about this book is that it isn't what you are expecting. I would like to read the next part, be warned it is small, but for the price it is good. I am interested to see where it goes from here, but I am still not certain I will like where it goes from here. This in itself is quite an interesting situation to find myself in. Usually given this much of the story line I could tell you definitively whether or not I was liking where it was going.
I think it has enough differences to your run of the mill sci-fi to be a welcome change, it is well written and edited not leaving the reader floundering to follow the plot. An enjoyable read with the potential to be a good series.

4.0 out of 5 stars part 1 of the forever gate March 22, 2013
By Sheri
Format:Kindle Edition
Received this one free electronically from Isaac as part of the giveaways, have to start out saying I'm not up to speed on reading electronically. This was only the 2nd I've read that way.

As to the storyline, it's a great premise, and I love the blending of environments. Some parts felt a bit rushed but that may just be that I'm used to reading a long series that spends a lot of time developing everything. I want to know more about this world! I really enjoyed the characters and storyline. Will definitely keep an eye out for the next episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story! January 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I was a bit worried when I first saw the number of pages; how much depth can a story less than a hundred pages have? But The Forever Gate was excellent, so much detail, complexity and, yes, depth pressed into these few pages. The writing was superb, the words had such a comfortable flow, it was a joy to read. I loved the characters, I thought Hoodwink was a great hero, strong, brave, honest, with a good sense of humour. I could definitely feel his emotions, the frustration, the adrenaline, the hopelessness, throughout the novella, the result of great writing and character-building.

I wrongly judged this book to be historical, and even though it clearly has a feel of medieval, it is actually dystopian, which is a very interesting blend. The idea that the modern society may reach a turning point, and regress to the medieval times is very intriguing. The ending was quite the brow-lifter, pretty much a parallell to the society-theory, well, you'll have to see for yourself.

The Forever Gate gave me a great experience, made my blood pump, and gave me a lot to think about when I was finished. Which is basically all I'm asking for in a story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great debut. Couldn't put it down January 7, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
You know how they say to never judge a book by its cover? The cover of "The Forever Gate" it's gorgeous, but I initially thought that this was a historical, then I've read the book description and I soon realized that something was off; the action is set in the year 3740 A.D. So no, this is not an historical novel, this is even better, "The Forever Gate" is a dystopian book combined with Sci-Fi.

I think I've been reading way too many YA fantasy books with naïve school girls chasing hot boys, because I needed this. "The Forever Gate" was like a breath of fresh air, a book in which serious matters are treated like they are: serious.

The main character, Hoodwink, is a habitant of a locked city, ruled by entities called "gols". Those creatures claim to protect the humans by blocking their powers thru collars they are forced to wear.

I liked Hoodwink from the very start, actually the entire story had me hooked up. I could almost feel the character's adrenaline running thru his veins while running for his life. In just 80 pages Hoodwinks life was saved and started to crumble in pieces. He is one of the most likable characters I've read lately: he is clever, brave, loyal and ready to sacrifice himself for what's important. He gets to experience fear, betrayal and pain.
The ending was a little weird, at least for me, it was more on the Sci-Fi part and I thought it was a sad and heartbreaking, a little victory of the character but with an unusual and shocking twist.

And just when I thought that I finished being shocked I read the sneak peak of the second volume, set in the near future after the first one and at the end of it there it was ... another cliffhanger. I will definitely read the second one.

** I received this book as an ARC for my blog in exchange of an honest review.**

3.0 out of 5 stars didn't really hook me
The story isn't bad however it seemed a bit sluggish. Knowing it had some Matrix elements dampened the suspense. I appreciate the fact that it was free.

Let's all wander in the wilderness no reason except stubbornness. All this from a character that has no claim to character. Arcane BS.
