It is a quirk of fate that we know the name of Einstein so much better than we know Poincare. For all that he wrote, however, in addition to being brilliant and incisive, Poincare writes in such a manner that the lay person, in most cases, can understand what he is saying. When I was younger, I believed that complicated subjects deserved complicated explanations and explications, but Poincare is a master at making difficult scientific subjects almost painless. In that regard, he reminds me of Richard Feynman whose books opened my young eyes to a new world of physics with such simplicity and clarity that it made me want to do more. This is a great collection in one binding and certainly one which anyone who aspires to understand the development of modern physics should have on his shelf.

Format: Paperback
This is a collection of: Science and Hypothesis, The Value of Science and Science and Method. For this collection I have to give two very different sorts of comments. The content is absolutely fascinating: Poincaré's very limited conventionalism includes a realist component, and his repudiation of platonism in mathematics is refreshing from a mathematician. It is also interesting to see a keen mind trying to make sense of many of the very many intellectual puzzles of the time. Alas, Poincaré was not to live to see these more or less resolved. However, this volume, in essence a bound collection of photocopies is horrible. It repeats a few pages in places and also, worse still, leaves some out. I cannot really recommend it at all for those reasons.
