Pretentious yammering April 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Nigel Kennedy acts out again, anxious to show that he's not merely a good fiddler. Now he's a composer and avatar of Higher Consciousness, a guide for the poor creatures here below. He wants us to reach satori through a meditation on the 4 elements: air, water, fire, earth. The first problem is that Nigel's no poet, not merely because he hasn't the language skills, but because he can't think past a cliche or in a way that makes at least minimal sense. The second problem is that he's not a particularly interesting composer. We get a constant Phil Spector wall of sound, over-miked, multi-tracked and reverbed to death, repetition rather than development, and in general conceptual and musical sprawl. It's pretty much the same sound from one track to the next. To be fair, Kennedy calls this "non-classical music." But he doesn't meet the standards of the Beatles, Brian Wilson, Robbie Robertson, Smokey Robinson, or Frank Zappa. As far as I'm concerned, this is Sony's Indulgence.
