I love this book! I wish every executive and every manager would read it and take it to heart. It's a fast read and I guarantee you'll recognize yourself and your organization in its pages. Even better, you'll come away with dozens of ideas on how to make your company more successful and a better place to work.

During a 25 year career as a senior manager in Silicon Valley, I worked for companies with very different cultures, e.g., IBM and Apple. I've seen the frustration caused when "the way we do things around here" gets in the way of getting things done.

Corporate culture impacts everyone and every action in an organization, for better or for worse. Since it's amorphous and can't be quantified, it's often ignored. Instead, most executives focus on the obvious: product development, customer satisfaction, strategic planning, finances. All critical! But few understand that corporate culture impacts all of the above.

Ford defines that connection and provides real-world examples. She spotlights cultural disasters (think Carly Fiorina at HP) as well as positive examples of how the right corporate culture leads to success.

We've all read books full of high-flown philosophy and business theory and wonder how we'd ever apply it to our own situation. But this book tells us precisely how corporate culture works (or doesn't work), presents situations we can all recognize, and tells us clearly how to fix what's broken.

Buy it! Read it! Act on it! You'll make a difference to your organization and to your own success!

I have an organizational development background so I've read quite a bit concerning corporate culture. Most of it has been either very academic or authors strongly suggesting that you get the 'right' culture. Easy to suggest, but they don't often tell you how to accomplish that small feat. They are right, however, the 'right' culture can make a significant impact on the bottom line. It is one of the most influential forces at work in an organization, but it's hard to see and even harder to change.

Dr. Ford has made this complicated subject accessible and pragmatic. Given that culture is so hard to see, I really like the way she presents key behaviors. Behaviors are indicators of a culture's unspoken 'rules' so if you're seeing the behaviors she outlines, chances are you have a culture that is working for you rather than against you.

The Fourth Factor explains actions a manager or executive could take with their team or organization and actually expect to make an impact. Not saying it will be easy, but Dr. Ford has provided many useful ways to move the needle.

I will keep one of these close by for my own reference and be recommending it to anyone who wants to get the best out of their company.

Just finished the 800 Pound gorilla and found it to be a fun and fascinating read. Dr. Ford has distilled a very complex subject into core concepts without dumbing it down. I found a wealth of actionable ideas to improve any company's culture and I will keep it as a reference on my desk and recommend it to my clients. This is a "must have" book for anyone in HR or for company leaders who want to make sense of "corporate culture".

Linda Ford has written a fantastic little book to help business leaders manage the often neglected but exceptionally important culture of their business. It is probably safe to say that if you are not proactively managing your company culture, it is managing you. This means that any time you attempt to create change in your organization, the culture decides if it will be successful, not you. And with the dismal 20% success rate of change initiatives, your project is just another statistic.

When you are ready for a different outcome, read this book. Take it seriously, and you will generate serious results. I recommend you buy enough for every member of your leadership team and make it required reading before your next executive retreat. You could use this as the foundation for your entire strategy session and produce measurable results. There are more golden nuggets in here than most books twice its size. Additionally, The Fourth Factor would also be excellent reading for any leadership development program - I'm adding it to my 360 Leadership Development programs.

In Linda's book are resources for managing the culture, developing trust in your organization, controlling the grapevine, Stakeholder alignment to your change strategy, and creating a ton of personal growth as a leader. She also shows you how your unchallenged assumptions lead to failures in decision-making and accountability, and ultimately create problems in strategy execution. Read the book and you'll learn how to avoid that trap.

By reading and applying the learning in The Fourth Factor, "You have tools in your hand to turn your culture into a competitive advantage. You can do that, or you can leave it to chance.
