Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Updated and expanded here is a factual, concise guide to grapes, growing areas, wines, vineyard techniques, and terms related to the making and drinking of wine organized in a dictionary format. Included are statistics on 1986 wine production, consumption, viticultural acreage in seven countries, and helpful pronunciation guides for foreign terms. Unfortunately, coverage is incomplete and somewhat erratic. For example, terms like "skin," "soapy," and "small" are explained, but some important historical information is left out; insignificant wine-producing states, such as Ohio, are discussed, while important ones, such as Oregon, are not. Not a strong candidate. Carolyn I. Alexander, USATEC Technical Information Ctr., Fort Ord, Cal.

We use this book constantly in our tasting room. I have years of experience in the wine industry and I'm always running to Schoonmaker to answer all kinds of obscure questions that our customers come up with. The format hits the major points of each topic without opinion or prejudice - how refreshing to get the facts without the hype on a subject that is over-hyped to begin with!

I cut my own wine-loving teeth on an earlier edition of this excellent encyclopedia, literally reading it from cover to cover over a weekend when I was first excitedly discovering the wine hobby. Alexis (not Alex) Bespaloff's revision (and his editors) unfortunately took a lot of the guts out of the old book -- along with adding in much new information about New World wines -- but it's still a useful reference, arguably the one single-volume encyclopedia a wine lover ought to have if you can have only one

This is the newest updated version of the classic "Frank Schoonmaker's Encyclopedia of Wine." More comprehensive & newer material that Alexis Bespalhoff continues in the Frank Schoonmaker style. It is still the "go to" book on wine & if you want to know anything & everything about wine including history, geographic locations, & pronunciation, this is for you. Vintage Port is classified within a 40 year spread. Impress any sommelier buy ordering your dinner wine by the name rather than the number. Names are spelled phonetically making pronunciation much easier. Very interesting anecdotal history. Expanded appendices include domestics & other major wine producing areas of the world. There is even a very helpful section on wine & food pairings. Great reading about a great subject.

I have this book since it came out. I still it useful and easy to use. I am not a wine expert but I enjoy finding more about what I am drinking. I wouldn't even consider another book.
