Book Description

February 27, 2013
"The world's greatest heroic fantasy artist, Frank Frazetta teams with J. David Spurlock, the bestselling author of How to Draw Chiller Monsters Werewolves, Vampires and Zombies for the all-new art collection entitled, The Frazetta Sketchbook.

In the revolutionary artist's extensive, May 10, 2010 obituary, The New York Times said, ""Frazetta helped define comic book (and) fantasy heroes like Conan, Tarzan and John Carter of Mars signature images were of strikingly fierce, hard-bodied heroes and bosomy, callipygian damsels"" Frazetta took the sex and violence of the pulp fiction of his youth and added even more action, fantasy and potentcy, but rendered his works with a panache seldom seen outside of Fine Art. Despite his sword-and-sorcery, science-fiction and fantasy subject matter, the quality of the work has not only drawn comparisons to the most brilliant of illustrators, Maxfield Parrish, Frederic Remington, Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, J. Allen St.John, and Joseph Clement Coll but even to the most brilliant of fine artists including Rembrandt and Michelangelo" and major Frazetta works sell for Fine Art prices. The November 24, 2003 Forbes magazine article Schwarzenegger's Sargent led with the line, ""Which artist helped make Arnold governor? Frank Frazetta, the Rembrandt of barbarians.""

Vanguard created the comics and fantasy artist sketchbook boom with editions on Al Williamson, Neal Adams, Wally Wood, Jeffrey Jones, John Buscema, John Romita and Alex Horley. Vanguard continues both their original sketchbook series and the Vanguard Frazetta Classics series with The Frazetta Sketchbook which was planned shortly before the icon of fantastic art's passing. The collection is brimming with rare and previously unpublished drawings and painting preliminaries of the subjects Frazetta is best remembered for including barbarians, wild beasts, Tarzan, buxom beauties, monsters and Conan. Foreword by New Yorker cover artist Peter de Sève

All editions feature big, 8.5"" x 11"" lavish illustrated, full-color pages with text."

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book March 4, 2013
By BigJohn
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is great for all the Frazetta-nuts out there. It has tons of sketches and roughs. I'm one of those people who scours the web looking for any image of anything made by Frazetta. So I've seen about 80% of the stuff in this book, and even still, about 20% is stuff I've never seen before. If you've only casually looked up Frazetta's work, I'd bet 90% of this book is work you haven't seen before.

It even has some of the watercolors he did for Ellie. I own the Pillow Book as well, and this stuff isn't in the Pillow Book. Though unfortunately the African series he did in watercolor isn't in this one. I'm dying for someone to release those in some book.

This is definitely a book worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a Frazetta sketchbook April 19, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Length: 1:05 Mins
This book took a long while to print since it was announced.

The Frazetta Sketchbook is actually part of the Vanguard published series of sketchbooks. Before this there were John Romita, Al Williamson, Wally Wood, Jeffrey Jones, John Buscema, Neal Adams and Alex Horley.

This book is focused on the sketches, unlike the finished paintings you see from the other artbooks like Icon, Legacy and Testament.

There are sketches, coloured painting drafts and life drawings. Subjects are those easily associated with Frazetta such as barbarians, wild beasts, bosomy damsels, monsters, Death Dealer, Tarzan and Conan. Most sketches are accompanied by the finished paintings for comparison, with some text.

As with Frazetta, his lines and the way he poses his characters are always amazing.

Great book for the Frazetta fans and sketchbook collectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star quality and 4 star content and a warning.... March 6, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
First thing- please take into account that I am an artist in illustration and design, and that bears a serious weight on my opinions stated here. This book may not be for those reading this review for that reason. It's a given that because of who I am and what I do others' mileage will vary.

This is by far the best book released to date by Vanguard, maybe a little on the pricier side but the quality makes it worth that price.
Out of the gate this is NOT a book for those who like Frank Frazetta's finished work more than they do seeing the process. If you are an artist or someone interested in the what starts as inspiration, and would like to see the bones that prop up the finished work, and you have the money to spare, this is the book for you.
If you're light on the cash, get the trade paperback as I'm sure it will be equally nice.

The reason behind my aforementioned warning is not a slam at the publisher, designer or content, well, at least not specifically. All the aspects of production are easily the best I've seen. It's the content. For what it is this may be the best one released. However, many who think they'll go into this and get a nice "art book" will soon realize that instead they've bought a look at what makes the artwork and not the finished product. It's like buying an art of the movie and expecting the movie itself. Fans, in their fervor to but anything with the artists name attached need to take responsibility for knowing what this book is and not what they THINK it will be.

The production is beautiful. Crisp and nuanced reproductions run throughout this volume. The design is open and large. I like the decision not to reproduce the finished work in large plates. They're included for comparison to the focus of the book- those being unfinished art and production sketches. This is a brave and correct decision on the part of the art director and designer but I know some fans will take issue. They shouldn't because those finished version ARE available in other books still in circulation.
They should buy those.

This book is a boon to the artists, peers and hard core Frazetta followers who are always eager to see rare art as well as admire the process Frank utilized to bring his works to fruition. It's not a big book because there are just too many examples still out there to bring to production. This is still a valid and essential work to get at Frank's artwork from a production angle.
The life drawing section alone is almost worth the price of the book. Here's Frank's legend meets the reality even he kept practicing to stay sharp. He was VERY good too! I see a little idealizing in his form but there's an honesty there too, one that kept his take on form both unique and grounded.
The production samples of works in progress run the gamut of light sketches to heavy, unrefined line art and color sketches. A few personal, private works are included to round this book out so that we get a better appreciation for the experience.

All in all, this books feels like it was needed to dispel some of the Frazetta myth and still give rise to a desire to see more like it in the future from the same publisher. Getting to see the man behind the curtain is never a bad thing. It can only add to his status as a man who thrilled us. Knowing it wasn't magic is not disappointing in the least.
