The bureaucratic fat cats in Washington are spending us into oblivion, and the mainstream media are too busy pandering to Barack Obama to notice that our country is going dangerously astray. In this book, Senator Mike Lee explains exactly how we got into this mess in the first place, how the courts have allowed it to happen, and how patriots like you and me can put our great nation back on track. If you share Thomas Jefferson’s view that big government leads to tyranny, I urge you to read Mike Lee’s important new book.”
Nationally syndicated radio talk show host
In The Freedom Agenda, Senator Mike Lee clearly explains how presidents and Congresses have exceeded the confines of the Constitution and how the courts have let them get away with it. His proposals to limit the federal government’s ability to take and spend our money will frustrate the big government types in both parties and warm the hearts of freedom lovers everywhere.”
Hon. Andrew P. Napolitano
Anchor of Freedom Watch on Fox Business Network
Mike Lee has written a book that would make our Founders proud, especially Alexander Hamilton, our first treasury secretary, who put America on a firm course of sound money and prudent finance.”
President and chief executive officer of Forbes
Senator Mike Lee reminds us of something that our Founders knew well: big government is a threat to freedom-loving people everywhere. We must stop its growth, and Senator Lee makes a compelling argument that a balanced budget amendment is the best way to do just that. There’s no better advocate for this kind of common-sense solution than Senator Lee, and there’s no better book to explain how to make it a reality.”
#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Original Argument

This book is common sense, not religion. If people back away from their deeply held religious beliefs, the obviousness of Lee's solutions will present itself.
The context of this proposed amendment, as Sen. Lee describes, isn't just a matter of decreasing the federal deficit, but is also a matter of individual freedom. Not just for our current generation, but for future generations as well. Sen. Lee rightfully spends much of this book focusing on the importance of the federal government staying within the boundaries of the Constitution. As impossible as this sounds, this book explains what can be done to return power from the federal government to its proper place with the states. (e.g. "...whenever any member of Congress votes to fund a federal program or create a new one, that person should explain where Congress gets its constitutional authority to run that program.")
Considering the short length, the importance of the subject, not to mention the low price tag, "The Freedom Agenda" is an absolute must-read for any American concerned about the expansion of federal power. Sen. Mike Lee makes the case that individual liberty can coexist best with a small federal government, and that passing a Balanced Budget Amendment can be one of the most important things we can do to return to the original Constitutional principles our Founders envisioned.
It will be interesting to see if he keeps with this line of thinking or backs down. So far so good for Mr. Lee. The toughest part for me was the 2nd half of the book was the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, etc. Thought important documents to have, it was just filler to sell more book.
The book shows how Supreme Court decisions over the last 75 years have neglected separation of powers inherent in the founding fathers concepts in favor of expansion of government powers especially of the executive branch. From an inside position Lee shows how Congress has been abrogating its authority to the president in an attempt to disclaim responsibility to the electorate. He describes how government share of resources was reduced back to normal after each emergency until the New Deal where government share of GDP never declined. That was facilitated by SC over expansive interpretation of the Commerce Clause and other general clauses. Lee makes a good case of how seemingly unlimited funds facilitates more and more federal power which has been condoned by the courts.
A strong feature of the book is its tendency to stay strictly on point. There are no distracting deviations into ideology or politics. Apparently Lee leaves that for another discussion similar to his metaphor of how the economic statement inherent in the Boston Tea Party morphed into political action.
Lee is aware of the political difficulty of budget limiting as evidenced by failure of the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act. He's also aware that some functions are necessarily the prerogative of government. Lee recognizes some legislative benefit of social programs but deplores the expansive interpretation of the Commerce Clause, preferring to use the 14th amendment to justify civil rights legislation.
There are some complexities that Lee doesn't consider.Read more ›
