I've read Ken Cooper, Atkins, South Beach, Lose It, etc. I've religiously followed the Lose It app routine to lose weight. I've read countless other books that I don't even remember. All these diet or exercise books explain what to do pretty well. But they don't really tell you what's going on. They leave you with questions-especially after things don't turn out the way you expect them to and you think you're some kind of exception. For example, when I was a young man, it amazed me that I could eat almost anything and not gain weight. As an old(er) man, I have lots of questions about aging, appetite, metabolism, and weight gain. It doesn't seem to me like I've done anything differently, but now I'm gaining weight. Freedom is the first book that has given me insight as to why, not by addressing it specifically, but by helping me understand how the body works, so I can come to some conclusions myself.

I don't mean this to sound like hyperbole, but Freedom really is the first book I've seen that explains how the human body works in a way I can understand and believe. As an engineer, I appreciate that the body is a marvelous machine, but how exactly does it work? In explaining it, Freedom debunks all the fad diets and crazy theories that are out there. I've known many of the concepts before, but they've never really been tied together in a cohesive explanation.

Here's an example. The book talks about "stomach hunger" and "brain hunger" where "brain hunger" corresponds to the cravings you have even when you're not necessarily hungry. By knowing exactly how appetite works, I can control stomach hunger pretty well. However, brain hunger is more difficult, and I think one of the best ways to fight brain hunger is to use your brain.

If you've ever been confused with all the back and fourth between high carb, low carb, high fat, low fat, etc., then this book will clearly explain why all the various diet fads can fall short in the long run. John explains the pros and cons of each macro-nutrient, and helps you realize that in the end it's all about balance.

The best part of the book however is where he goes into details about habits. He breaks down the science of habits and how you can finally free yourself from old addicting unhealthy habits and instill healthier habits. This is absolutely key for making sure your diet success is sustainable over the rest of your life. It also means that even if you think you have no willpower, you can still succeed when you know how to work with your brain to create changes from the inside out.

The food recommendations are all good and you shouldn't find yourself feeling deprived with all the options.

As a fitness enthusiast, I can recommend the Freedom Diet because it's simple, effective, and prioritizes maintaining good health as being equal to weight loss.

This book is excellent.

The author breaks down nutrition in the way that is most appealing to me - understanding exactly how our body responds to cravings, within the body and within the mind.

It's far easier to be the master of one's choices when we can understand and appreciate that the same ancient processes that fuel our survival fuel our desire for unhealthy foods. And therefore, far easier to take control of our health!

This book is short, sweet, and to-the-point. And it's full of actionable, relevant know-how that can be put to use right NOW in this modern world. We live in a confusing time for our bodies - and this book creates clarity and sorts out the clutter.

Beyond worth the money and time it'll take you to read this.

What I like best about this book is that the author has carefully chosen concepts from several popular and classic diet plans, tweaked them to fit his weight loss strategy, and consolidated them into a book and a plan which emphasizes habit changes over fighting hunger. The exercise components are included as expected, however he addresses specific benefits to be derived from the various recommended exercises.

"The Story of the Donut" is exceptional in that it describes how the sensory forces incentivize us to ingest undesirable food components that make us want more junk food. He gives some solutions to cravings--both habit change and specific foods to curb them.

This could be the only diet you'll ever need. John Tighe may not be the most popular diet writer and practitioner with competing book authors, as this may be the last diet book you will ever need to buy.

John Tighe, has researched extremely well the psychology behind dieting and what it takes to be successful at it. He demonstrates great expertise in knowledge about the health factors of food and how exercise plays hand in hand with a consistent long term and balanced life style that enables you to enjoy life at its fullest. John outlines for the reader the way to move forward to permanent weight loss including practical advice for your day to day health management. I absolutely enjoyed this book. It is a well rounded approach! Great work!

Not only does this book cut through the diet "crap", but it opens your eyes to why all the other diets you have tired, have failed. It clearly talks about how our bodies react and process foods. The part that really opened my eyes was the part about "stomach hunger" vs. "brain hunger". Wow what a concept, you've got to check it out. This book also gives you true action steps that are easy-to-follow with the "plate system" No more yo yo diets. Finally the information is available to keep your weight under control for a lifetime. I highly recommend this book!
