North Americans have a bad habit of forgetting history, and not just their own. Before their was a Vietnam War, the French were fighting it out tooth and nail with the Viet Minh to preserve the next-to-last reminent of their colonial empire. They lost, and the United States leapt in convinced they could do what the French had failed at. This book gives you an excellent persepctive on this forgotten bit of Indochinese history. Although the main thrust is on the uniforms and other militaria, it also gives the reader a "grunt's" view of the war. Some interesting historical tidbits too. Get it and see.

I had been trying to get this book for years and was excited when it was finally in-stock. To my dismay, all the original artwork illustrations were badly reproduced and in a yellowish tinge therefore rendering any references to uniform colors totally pointless. As Osprey Publishing's key attraction is their excellent illustrations, this reprinted edition drops below their usual high QC standards.

However, this book serves as a good overview primer to understanding the French Army's experience in Vietnam.

This book proves a concise summary of the French Indochina war, but its real value is to provide visual context. Typical of all Osprey series books it is well illustrated and well captioned. There are organizational details and equipment explanations. The text is too short to provide more than a brief and cursory explanation of operations, but this is not its purpose. Author Martin Windrow is an expert on Indochina and is the author of a definitive book about the battle Dien Bien Phu. This book is an excellent companion to the works of Bernard Fall (STREET WITHOUT JOY, HELL IN A VERY SMALL PLACE< etc) and the recent spate of revisionist looks at the French experience in Indochina. Highly recommended as a supplementary text .

Following World War Two, France was attempting to reclaim their overseas empire. Even though most European nations had granted independence to many of their colonies, France had no intention of giving Indochina theirs. What followed was a bloody eight-year struggle that ended in humiliating defeat for the French nation.

This book is great for what it is. This is a quick and effective way to see what both sides of the struggle looked like. You get to see some photographs of the different sides, and also get a look at some drawings of uniforms and equipment. The problem with the book though is, it only covers a very basic amount of info on the conflict. For some people this may be sufficient, but as a student of history, I wanted a little bit more. Still for the lack of material on the subject, this book serves its purpose well.

I highly recommend this to any student of the French military post-WW2, European colonial engagements and general interests in military history. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and would check out other offerings from this company as well.

Again, a well done book from Martin Windrow. If I were to put together an French army from this war the Illustrations would be of great value. Only one way to find out read it for your self.

Excellent summary of the series. Given how little is written about the subject in English. However it should be revisited in a multi-volume series. I would divide the series as follows:
Volume 1: French forces
Volume 2: Viet Minh
Volume 3: pro-French Vietnamese forces

Given improvements in Vietnamese-western relations in the last twenty years. I'd imagine there is a wealth of new information available.

Another fine book form Opsrey about a part of our world histry many seem to forget. I do wish the book was a bit longer in certain areas it leaves the read wanting more information. The Photo's and color art work are great and so is the information pertaining to them.
