Book Description

April 30, 2012

Americans diet while the French dine. But is it true that French women don’t get fat? Is there a French Paradox—the counterintuitive notion that a diet that includes cheese, chocolate, and wine is associated with improved cardiovascular health and weight management?

The ancient wisdom and long-held traditions of the French have, in fact, been validated. Recent and groundbreaking nutritional science confirms what the French have known for centuries—there is no paradox at all. Enjoying high-quality, real, even so-called “decadent” foods—prepared with awareness and savored with pleasure and relaxation, and in moderation—ensures a lifetime of relatively effortless weight management. In The French Twist, nutritional consultant Carol Cottrill lets American women in on twelve secrets for organizing their personal rhythms and rituals around this concept, which can have a profound effect on their metabolism and weight.

Talk to a French woman and you may learn that, rather than a French Paradox, there exists a French Dilemma. The French love good food and wine, and certainly the idea of a pleasurable life of large meals with family and friends, but these preferences must be reconciled with their desire to be attractive and healthy. The French woman will allow herself to enjoy an excellent meal, but she will naturally eat less and walk more to compensate. She is quietly self-disciplined in her efforts, and she automatically observes portion savoir-faire. This typical and widely practiced solution to the French Dilemma results in what we perceive as the French Paradox.

The truth is that Americans are not different from people in other countries. We just have different eating habits. Americans are hungry for an alternative to the restrictions of dieting. The French Twist offers a realistic, commonsense, tried and true approach—core values that include the concept of a person’s natural weight, nourishment, pleasure, healing, and the welfare of future generations.

Book Description

With wit and wisdom, The French Twist: Twelve Secrets of Decadent Dining and Natural Weight Management explores the French attitudes of reverence and respect for food and dining. Based on a desire to take the American obsession with weight and fitness in a new direction, it exposes the shortcomings of quick-fix fad diets, encourages readers to examine their unique connections to food, and asks them to abandon their fears about eating and to reject such common myths as the idea that to lose weight we need to eat less and exercise more. Among the secrets the book reveals are the importance of eating authentic and high-quality food, and the role of pleasure and balance in proper nutrition and successful weight management. Throughout, the French approach is validated by up-to-date science on metabolism as it relates to the psychology of eating.

From the Author

The very act of dieting is a set up for failure. 45 million Americans are on a diet right now--and as a nation we are fatter than ever before.

Dieting does more long-term harm than good by teaching us to ignore our body's natural internal cues around eating--about hunger or fullness, taste and preference while replacing these instincts with the external dictates of a diet.

My desire to unravel this obsession was sparked by my own two-year stint with an overzealous fitness trainer who preached a low-carb regimen. What began as an innocent attempt to improve my diet and fitness level ended in unwarranted restrictive eating and extreme exercise.  I didn't know how to get off the treadmill- literally and figuratively.

As a nutritional consultant I've spent years studying dieting and the negative effect it has on hundreds of women. Every day in my practice a woman tells me that she can't be trusted to make the right food choices for herself.  What she really can't trust is the dieting that required her to abandon her freedom, choice and happiness for a craze.  A craze that left her heavier mentally and physically than when she started.

I've helped many people come to terms with the futility of fad dieting.  It can be done, and while there is no silver bullet, there is a natural, tried and true approach to weight management, that dare I say is pleasurable- even decadent!

Can it be? Is this notion of living better, feeling in control of our lives and eating naturally without being subjugated to someone's diet plan simply too good to be true?

There are many examples of people around the world whose culture supports an authentic lifestyle with the added benefit of longevity.  In my book, The French Twist: Twelve Secrets of Decadent Dining and Natural Weight Management I zeroed in on the French way of eating as a case in point; the French adhere to a centuries old philosophy, a value system of reverence and respect around food and dining.  And let's not forget about the red wine, bread, cheese and pastries.

I hope that by adding a little French Twist, you will join cultures around the globe who enjoy a peaceful relationship with food and a longer, slimmer and healthier life to show for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Insightful and Entertaining June 27, 2012
Format:Paperback
Many diet books take the reader through the 'do this and not that' concept. I have a hard time getting through them and most of the time I can look up 'lists' of good and bad foods on the web. The French Twist is the first 'diet' book (even though it is not really about "dieting" at all - thank God) I've really enjoyed reading from front to back. Carol, the author, relates it to her personal journey and how she came to the realization of what we REALLY need after years of nutritional study. She provides great nutritional tidbits on how to curb habits, choose for both our hips AND tastebuds and share secrets of how to obtain those fantastic figures of French women. Carol leads the reader through laugh-out-loud anecdotes that all of us can relate to. The best part - we really don't ever have to deprive ourselves! By following these easy guidelines in The French Twist, I have been able to throw out the diet books, maintain a great figure and enjoy life and all the incredible food that comes with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bon Vivants Unite! March 1, 2013

Who doesn't *love* a secret?

Especially one that unlocks the door to a better life?

Well, The French Twist offers twelve secrets--and much more, including meaningful "insider" tips easily added to any daily routine. The book is fun and well written by a knowledgeable nutritionist, which gives the book heft.
This is not a diet book per se--such books often require a strict regimen which dooms readers by the second week. Instead, the author shows why the French--who practically invented fine dining (and introduced us to croissants)--easily maintain healthy weight levels.

The author underscores how we became a fat nation: Americans associate enjoyment of food with over-consumption. Tonnage, Big Macs, foot long subs. Also, once the extra pounds materialize, Americans imagine effective weight loss can only be achieved via a strict deprivation "diet." These two fallacies keep us fat.

So the author offers a delicious approach to food which can help any person maintain healthy weight. We learn the French eat four times the amount of butter than Americans! But read the author's valid deconstruction of margarine--a misguided American staple-- and you'll never eat margarine again.

How they eat helps explain why the French live longer than Americans. (I always thought we had the longevity statistic cornered.) The French eschew processed foods, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners (which can trigger auto-immune diseases). Cornerstones of their food choices include foie gras, soufflés, duck in many variations, cream, and cheese, cheese, cheese.

We learn that time of day matters. Also, the French, like most Europeans, sit down for their meal. They wouldn't dream of strolling a public street eating pizza, ice cream.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hot Mess January 11, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I agree with another reviewer who said that the book is all over the place. For instance why go into a detailed description of the Harris-Benedict equation if you are stating there is no point in counting calories? I am giving this book 3 stars (not less) because the mess of ideas and stories mirrors my journey to become a non-dieter (not quite there yet) so it helped me feel validated. This book also led me to the book The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight Loss by Marc David. Most of the research cited in The French Twist is also cited in The Slow Down Diet but in a much more professional and well-written manner. I say skip this book and go straight to The Slow Down Diet: Eating for Pleasure, Energy, and Weight Loss.

I also recommend: The Diet Survivor's Handbook: 60 Lessons in Eating, Acceptance and Self-Care, Intuitive Eating, 3rd Edition, The Self-Compassion Diet, The Rules of Normal Eating, Moving Away from Diets

1.0 out of 5 stars Sort of a mess...author is all over the place. November 21, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Is this a nutrition book from a professional, a memoir, or social commentary? Why, it's all three! This book is all over the place and the author seems confused by her own revelations regarding a good diet. She points out good things about the French way of eating and highlights the idiocy of the SAD (I agree on both), but contradicts herself later in the book. Which side are you on? Also, for someone who is giving advice on French ways, she seems a little green. The memoir info and the social commentary, which comes later in the book, could have been left out. I gave it to goodwill.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book after my own heart November 6, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The French Twist is a book about food, perspective and life that speaks to the lessons my Nonnie always taught me: Everything in moderation. Starve yourself of that which you crave and you are bound to binge at some point. Prohibit pleasures and gluttony will soon follow. Yet the French seem to have cracked the code. Enjoy what you crave, indulge in what you want - in moderation - and not only will you find happiness in the act of dining, but your waistline will thank you as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever wondered if they could have their cake and eat it too!
