2.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Abusive Hero February 9, 2012
By Mary
Format:Kindle Edition
Okay, I can understand how all reviewers thusfar have given this book five stars; it does seem promising in the beginning, starting with a terrifying attack and rescue with the promise of a developing romance and thrilling action. However, I'm halfway through the book now and am so furious with the characters that I have to provide an alternate reaction than those who loved it.

It has always irked me that authors feel the need to throw in supporting characters that tell the hero and heroine that they love each other when "on the surface" it seems like hate. In this story, though, I am more than irritated, I am enraged and would throw my Kindle against the wall if I could. Granted, the heroine's behavior is somewhat immature and more like that of a teenager than a 20-year-old, but the hero is flat out abusive. I have no tolerance for sexual exploitation or violence and though he hasn't raped her (yet,) I wouldn't be surprised if he did. When Elena is nearly gang raped at the start of the book, he blames her. As much as the author attempts to clarify that he really doesn't, it is still stated repeatedly how enraged he is and how much he "despises" Elena for supposedly putting herself in that situation. Blame the victim, how romantic. Then, with their every interaction, he belittles, mocks, and humiliates her, to the point that she has spent pretty much the entirety of the story in tears. Then there's his sexual exploitation of her. After her attack, she is vulnerable and emotionally confused, as well as extremely inexperienced and ignorant when it comes to sex and physiological responses. He brutishly forces his kisses and gropes on her and when she responds with her own desire, she's confused. This makes her back off and tell him no, and what does he do?

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing characters; more sex than story June 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was extremely disappointed in this book. The hero is physically and verbally abusive. The heroine is dense; her stupidity constantly puts her in life threatening situations. Just because she doesn't like being told what to do, she disregards everyone's "rules" that would keep her safe. Her parents--especially her father and grandfather, laugh off the abusive hero because "he's in love." The author spends more time "throwing in sexual encounters" than she spends developing her story. And again, the hero is abusive and the heroine a pushover. I kept reading thinking it would get better. I should have stopped reading early on--it doesn't get any better. Guess in some ways, I'm as dense as the heroine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't even finish the book! July 6, 2012
By Tess64
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have never felt compelled to write a review before...good or bad. This book was a waste of my time. The overuse of the "c$#£" word was very offensive. I think the majority of women find this word offensive I can't for the life of me understand why it was used in a romance novel!

The male love interest/hero character was abusive to his love interest! Physically, sexually, mentally and verbally and this is supposed to be sexy how? The main female character was a virgin and treated horribly.

Women have come a long way with issues of self-esteem, abuse and domestic violence. This book sets us back 50 years! Save your money!

2.0 out of 5 stars Ugh! What an awful book June 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm definitely not a fan of this book. The lines between abuse and affection were blurred on too numerous occasions to count. I couldn't enjoy the interaction between the hero and his heroine because of the many physical abuse and verbal insults that passed back and forth between both of them. I'm a firm believer that love brings respect, and saw little evidence of this for the first half of the book.

Elena in many cases acted like an immature, spoiled and disrespectful child, who showed little regard for rules put in place for her safety and for the consequences of her actions on others until much later in the book. And Bai acted little better than she did by treating her like a disobedient, recalcitrant child.

It's amazing that the dynamic between didn't change until they had sex, which I find very hard to believe or swallow. Why should sex bring the respect and affection between them that didn't exist in their earlier interactions? I didn't enjoy the SM of the book, and was shocked that it seemed to be an accepted behavior by Elena's family. In the end, it left a sour taste in my mouth and not even the steamy scenes could redeem this book for me. I don't think I'll be reading any more books from this writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abusive?........maybe January 5, 2013
By s long
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I originally read this book first then went back and bought the whole series. At first I was shocked and wanted to slap some sense into Elena and tell her to run as far from Bai as possible. Next I thought of the date and setting. Women had little rights you needed a strong man to survive or some other man could just take you. Elana really needed a man she couldn't run over. Bai was it. The writing really related to the time and culture and the love scenes. HOT. I would only suggest for over 18 and openminded. If you want chaste kisses; flowers and princes this book isn't for you but if you like realistic characters a lot of culture and steamy sex pick it up. I will be looking for all new works from this author.

Well, this started out great. But I got tired early on with the author's insistence on emphasizing the female lead's voluptuous figure. Also, the clan war thing was pretty boring. Read more

More About the Author

I write Sizzling Romantic Suspense. My stories are the stories of my heritage. From the residue in my personal blender of mixed races, cultures and world views, my characters emerge. It comforts me to know that while evil slinks in the shadows, the "good guys" of the world sniff it out - and snuff it out.

My stories are not your mama's soft edged romances with swashbuckling heroes and blushing heroines. Heck no! These guys are arrogant alpha males and the feisty women who bring them to their knees -and vice versa... They fight hard, love hard and don't mince words. They are dangerous men and women in dangerous times.

Love, passion and ridding the world of evil? What's not to like?
