5.0 out of 5 stars Arsenal for All July 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
It's heartbreaking when children grow up self conscious, as a result of weight gain, when the responsible adults in their lives are not equipped to help them combat the ills of living in a society that "eats to live". Those children are at a disadvantage from the start, but many, (whether from households that established healthy eating habits or otherwise), go away to college and gain the dreaded 15. I know I did! I also just witnessed the same when my son's friend returned home from college the other day. She was almost unrecognizable. She appeared to want to be ignored because of her new and different physical appearance. My daughter and I both thought to ourselves, "She could have used 'The Freshman 15 Survival Guide'." This book should be a tool in this nation's arsenal to get us back on track, starting in our colleges where young minds need "fuel" as much as they need "fire" from their academic studies. The tips and recipes within provide ammunition for healthy lifestyle maintenance and equip students to achieve their best during such a critical period of adjustment and adventure. We, the ones who are always searching for ways to help our children achieve balance and health, should start a campaign to get this book in the hands of every college freshman in the nation. Why not send them in care packages, like we do for our troops? The effect would be phenomenal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Read July 23, 2014

Listen I don't write many reviews. Or fan letters. In fact I'm even pretty picky with the complements I give out... but THIS book - The Freshman 15 Survival Guide - is a great and important read for just about everyone.

Why?

Because ANYONE will benefit form these simple but effective changes. What I loved about this book is that it's concise - versus all the other diet, fitness, health ad nauseam books out there and take 300 plus pages to make one single point. I appreciate that it didn't waste my time. I was able to read this in one sitting. Boom. Done. Got it. I felt like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, when after 30 seconds he proclaims, "I know Kung-Fu." Well now, with "The Freshman 15 Survival Guide," I DO know Kung-Fu when it comes to smart healthy eating in pressure cooker situations... like college.

And that's a major point of this book --

It's not just for college freshmen - it's for EVERYONE who wants to eat right and stay healthy but has a hectic lifestyle. This is a mandatory read for anyone who is on the go with too little time for "the luxuries" like preparing complete meals, eating properly, or a fitness training regime.

Here's the deal - I've read a bazillion diet and health books and guess what? They all work... just not for me.

They ALL work (at some level at least) IF YOU HAVE THE TIME to deal with the shopping, and the food prep, and the storage, and the meal times and the etc. etc etc. etc. Every single one is a major time suck of food prep and lifestyle change that I could never add to my life. That's why this Freshman 15 Survival book is such genus. It's not asking me to change my life! It's not saying, "just grit your teeth, and tough it out, and someday this will get easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed reading this book August 26, 2014

I really enjoyed reading this book, The Freshman 15 Survival Guide: Tips & Tricks to Survive Your First Year In College Without Gaining the Dreaded 15 lbs.! I felt it was extremely easy to follow and was a quick read. I didn't gain any weight in college; in fact, I lost. But I was also a collegiate athlete whose parents weren't the best at providing us kids with non-fattening meals. Going to college was a time for me to learn HOW to eat the right way. Also, because I was a collegiate athlete, I was forced to take many seminars on "eating right" and "eating for performance". So my mentality was different than probably many of the college students out there today. I will say, though, that although college is a time that is challenging for many people in terms of weight, there are also other lifetime milestones where a person may have trouble in terms of gaining weight. It came way later for me. But this book would be good for anybody going through any milestone where they may have trouble with weight. I would highly recommend this book to any senior graduating high school and getting ready to go to college or anyone who may be getting ready to enter a milestone in life which may potentially cause weight gain. I feel like the tips in this book will help college students and anyone reading it become successful in many different areas of life if followed.

This guide is exactly what kids, and parents, need before heading out into the college world. As a college student myself, I found that staying healthy in college was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It became more of a mindset to maintain the weight I had lost before going to college and not allowing myself to reverse what I had worked so hard to get.
There are a few things in here that I cannot stress enough to young adults heading to college - sleep, workout, and have a fridge!! These are exactly the things that allowed me to stay healthy while in college and thankfully not gain the freshman 15.
One point that they made that I completely agree with is that the habits you make while in your first year of college are the things that will determine what happens for the rest of college and into your adult life!
This survival guide will help guide college kids to make the right decision and avoid gaining that weight that so many of us dread!
I would recommend this to anyone who is about to go into college. Well done!
