Editorial Reviews

Review

"I recently handed out copies of The Fuel and The Flame to all of Campus Crusade’s missions leaders. I have a son who just started college this fall and I sent him off with a copy as well. F and F is among the most visionary, historical, and practical handbooks published in the past two decades." -- Ken Cochrum, Campus Crusade for Christ, VP, GlobalCampusStrategy "I read every word. I couldn't put it down. I've been looking for something to train my key students and this is perfect. If you really want to do campus ministry, you have to get this book." -- Derrick Moore, Fellowship of Christian Athletes "This is an awesome book on how to build and grow a Christian campus ministry, written by a man with great experience and insight in that area. Having been involved in campus ministry for 6 years as a graduate and 4 years as a student, I thought that this book would be, at best, review for me. Instead I found myself challenged throughout. Now I have to read it over again, taking thorough notes on how I want to reshape what I do on campus. I highly recommend it." -- Chris "As a college student my life was changed by living out the principles that Steve teaches in this book. The Fuel and the Flame is a catalyst for every young adult seeking to take the Christian life seriously. From beginning to end Steve draws you in as he offers incredible insight on how to change your world." -- Todd Ahrend, The Traveling Teams

Anyone that wants their life to make an impact for Jesus in the world should begin with a tool like this. The principles in The Fuel and the Flame transend their university ministry setting and give practical advice and passionate vision for any person interested in making disciples. Steve's "Fuel" principles will deepen your walk with the Lord, and the "Flame" portion will spark creative and timeless ministry strategies for any sphere of life. Steve speaks this truth out of hard earned lessons in ministry, and in a way that is authentic and memorable. This is the discipleship manual for our century.

a lot of kids walk away from the faith when they get to college. This book is a great tool for graduating high school seniors to help them figure out how to keep walking with Christ in college and also how to reach others for Christ. High school seniors and college students will benefit and be challenged by the Fuel and the Flame.

This book is a simple "How To" when it comes to laboring on a college campus. It takes Bibilical Truth and offers practical ways to put it to use, especially on a college campus. It is also practical for anyone who desires to train disciples wherever they are at in life. I'm still learning from it and it has already had a major impact on my life.

Introduction

Perhaps no greater harvest field or sanctifying greenhouse exists for the Christian than that of the college campus. Steve Shadrach's thesis is unmistakable when it comes to his conclusion about the vault of spiritual wealth that is largely untouched by students during their college experience. The typical college student overlooks these assets in search of an American dream lifestyle that is the farthest thing from Jesus' command to seek first the kingdom of God. Studies, sports, and social relationships are a means to garner comfortable silver-spooned futures instead of a means to find others' comfort in the arms of a forgiving Savior. Therefore, Walt Heinrichsen makes this staggering, but true statement, "If you are at college for any other reason that to be a missionary for Jesus Christ, you are there for selfish, sinful reasons." Steve Shadrach has written The Fuel and the Flame: 10 keys to ignite your college campus for Jesus Christ to ensure that these selfish and sinful tendencies associated with collegiate life are replaced with the fuel of the Great Commandment and the Flame of the Great Commission!

Purpose

This paper aims to briefly review the content shared by Steve Shadrach and evaluate whether he clearly communicated his thesis and provided ample enough reasons and practical steps to persuade the reader to believe and apply it. The second section will discuss and answer one question sparked by the content of the book, "What characteristics mark a finished product in the discipleship process and what type of scale should be used to evaluate ones progress and growth in godliness and mission?"

Review

Steve Shadrach's book, The Fuel and the Flame is divided into two major parts.

The first thing that comes out in this book is Steve's passion for the younger generation and his belief that they are powerful! He has a true, deep conviction of their capacity to change the world.

Furthermore, this book has a form that is relevant to anyone who would read it and has the opportunity to truly inspire those who allow it to change them.

Steve Shadrach is a guy who has poured his life into college students. He shares his years of experience and the strategic insights he has gained in The Fuel and the Flame. The thing I love most about this book is that Steve advocates doing evangelism the way Jesus did it--which is to focus on a few and help them to become evangelists and disciple makers. This is a great book for anyone in high school or college ministry. The Fuel and The Flame: 10 Keys to Ignite Your College Campus for Jesus Christ
