This is Kozol's only published work of fiction, written while he was an undergrad at Harvard. It's an incrediblly sweet yet senuous love story with a touch of the heartbreak we have all gone through when first love falls apart. I read it as I was going through the heartbreak of a breakup of my first real deep love. I often think that reading this book help me survive that heartbreak. I once contacted Kozol and begged him to sell me the film rights. He steadfastly refused, concerned that it would undermine his credibility in the important work he was doing in education. Apparently, there was an attempt in 1964 to make a film of it, but it apparently didn't happen. This book is a precious gem about innocense, young passion and lost love. Along with "Catcher in the Rye", it's a favorite book of my youth. It also reveals, I suspect, a side of Kozol he seldom if ever shares.

I had to do a presentation for class on Kozol. So I ordered his only fiction book. The book is somewhat of a romance novel, so it has kinda bored me. But it's not badly written.
