5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reads, July 28, 2011
This review is from: The Further Accounts of the Imaginary Friend (Paperback)
I have been reading PS Giffords work for many years and I have always enjoyed it. You may be tempted to read these short stories as a quick escape during the workday, or maybe for a moments relaxation before bed, but I will caution you. When suddenly you realise the clock has sped forward and it is far later than you imagined, because you just kept reading story to story, blame Paul. I have found the phrase 'I have time for just one more' to be terribly misleading as you are not going to be satisfied with 'just one more'.
These short stories are just long enough to let you feel the cold fingers on the back of your neck or to have you getting up and shaking out the sheets just one more time. I would love to see them turned into a 'Twilight Zone' or similar sort of series.

4.0 out of 5 stars An English version of "The Twilight Zone", May 22, 2011
This review is from: The Further Accounts of the Imaginary Friend (Paperback)
Overall this is a pretty good book. Gifford structures it in a way that reminded me a lot of The Twilight Zone, with the conceit of the mysterious Imaginary Friend introducing, narrating, and commenting on the conclusion of each story. The stories themselves are very short for the most part and this makes for a great read when you know you will be interrupted by something, whether on the can or by the pool. While they're not all winners, there's quite a few good stories in here with imagery that will stick with you until long after you've closed the book (The Cat Lady story, in particular, still sticks with me). Unfortunately Gifford's voice works best for English characters and comes off a bit false with American characters. This, however, is an earlier book so I imagine Gifford has gotten better in later works. All in all I enjoyed it and the Imaginary Friend is a strong character that makes it enjoyable to follow his exploits. This really would be great as a BBC show.

PS Gifford is a spellbinding storyteller, offering all the joys of discovering what's around the next dark corner. If you want a fresh spin down familiar cobwebbed hallways, take the hand of an imaginary friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars E.A. Poe meets S. King, March 6, 2010
This review is from: The Further Accounts of the Imaginary Friend (Paperback)
This is a collection of short stories that keep you guessing to the very end. More Twilight Zone in tone than actual horror in many ways. But if you are a fan of good storytelling and enjoy being entertained by the written word....This is the book for you.

It is a follow up to this title- and Gifford's style has improved.
