Editorial Reviews

Celebrated songwriter and musician Edie Brickell will release two new albums this January on her own independent label, racecarLOTTA Records. The first, Edie Brickell, is out January 11 and The Gaddabouts will follow on January 25. Coinciding with these releases, Brickell will perform a special show with Iron & Wine on January 29 at Radio City Music Hall. Additionally, The Gaddabouts will make their live debut at Carnegie s Zankel Hall as part of the WFUV concert series on April 8. Produced by Charlie Sexton, Brickell began writing her self-titled solo album during her 2003 tour in support of Volcano. The solo record was then put hold to focus on The Gaddabouts, a new project featuring Steve Gadd, Pino Palladino and Andy Fairweather-Low. The group s forthcoming debut is composed of material written by Brickell over the past decade as well as songs written with the band in the studio the very day of recording. Both conceived of and developed throughout the past decade, the two resulting projects were only coincidently finished at the same time. Of the synchronicity, Brickell notes, ''it's like a horse race; both projects are kicking in the stall and I gotta let em run.''

From top to bottom this record is silky smooth. With catchy hooks, deceivingly simple rhythms and harmonies, this record is definitely note worthy! With a star studded line up, Edie Brickell's voice is a perfect topper for these wonderfully talented musicians. Steve Gadd has assembled a tremendous team that really breathes life into familiar sounds and melodies, with such sensitivity and understanding that only true masters of their craft could possibly lend. In a time when the record industry is in shambles, thank the heavens for real musicians who love what they do! With tracks like "My Heart","Good For Me" and "More Than Anybody", we are treated to wonderful expression that blends musical genres in such a clever way that even my young children love it! Can't wait to see them live and hope The Gaddabouts make many more records!!

If you are new to Edie Brickell --which oddly enough I am-- prepare to be amazed. Like another reviewer here, I find it astonishing that she isn't a household name. You can scarcely find another talent within the creative pop/folk/alt genres to equal let alone surpass her originality. Her voice seems to include a little Emmy Lou Harris and a bit of Gillian Welch. I am saddened how infrequently popular music reveals any harmonic or melodic originality, but Edie creates plenty. "Good For Me" is the prime example on this disc, an absolutely stunning track which borrows rhythmically from Steve Gadd's former days with Steely Dan. I also like "Let it Slide". By all means check out this lovely artist.

when screening for new Edie Brickell music, I came across this specific item and anything that has Edie has got to be great! I'm not too keen of the New Bohemian music, but her solo music rocks! Can't wait for Edie and/or Gaddabouts to come in concert on the West Coast! Too long out of the concert loop, Edie!

I agree with the other reviewers that this is indeed a good record and just about anyone would enjoy it, however my enthusiasm does not stand up on every track the way theirs' does. I am that enthusiastic about maybe 5 of the tracks. The band is just as it should be: would that we could hear more sensitive and nuanced accompaniment like this. Edie Brickell really creates a feeling and her stories really come alive with this band. I love her voice and I think this has to be, all things considered, her best record to date. The opening track is great and will take you right in. "Let It Slide" is my anthem of the year! "My Heart" is another favorite, but it sounds kinda lame when they go into that 3/4 swing (I'm usually not crazy about Steve Gadd's jazz playing anyway - I think his "pop" playing is more "jazz" than his jazz! - here it just feels a little unnecessary and it damn near kills the groove for me; to be fair though, there's a lot of shuffling brushwork on this record and it feels great). It's listenable throughout, even if I'm not crazy about every track, but I reckon I'll always enjoy this one.

"The Gaddabouts" is eleven tracks of solid good music. The record has a very grounded, almost folksy feel, and Edie's singing is as fine as ever. The highly proficient musicianmanship of The Gaddabouts personnel can make these recordings sound deceptively simnpler than they actually are. You will be rewarded by repeated listens. With the release of her eponymous masterpiece, and this masterfully crafted record, (both in January of this year), I will remember 2011 as the year of Edie Brickell; the same year in which her husband, the great Paul Simon, released another gem in his storied canon. I wish I would have expressed my support for this record when I first received it last January. I agree with the previous reviewer, I hope Edie and The Gaddabouts release many more records.

I'm a really enthusiastic fan of Edie. I love her voice and all her songs. She became famous as a singer of The New Bohemians (fantastic band!). In this new album, with a new band, it looks that Edie is exploring new music and rithmics. The result is lovable and I enjoyed it a lot. For me it is difficult to say if this is the best Edie's album because I love all her music; but I can say that some of the songs here included are among the best. Generally speaking, the album is arranged very well. I recommend it to everybody.
The new band seems perfect for Edie's voice and style (at east as the previous one!), and I hope Edie and The Gaddabouts will give us new songs soon.
