Book Description

When things go wrong, when we hurt, when we're sad, it's good to know that we're not alone. It helps to know someone cares.

When Inknbeans Press learned Gage Bailey was going to undergo surgery, and endure a long and uncomfortable recover, with scars he would never be able to hide, we asked a few people to put together some funny stories and points for a little book.

We thought we'd get nine or ten.

We got more than forty. And people offered artwork, editing services, a book trailer, support and marketing. The profits from this endeavor will go to helping other children who are facing surgery or treatment which require a long recovery, primarily through Ronald McDonald House.

No one affiliated with this book is making any money from it. The only payment we're getting is to be able to tell a kid he's not alone.

People care.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'What the world needs now': A Project of Pure Love April 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Should you or anyone you know be facing a situation where a youngster is diagnosed with a lesion that requires major surgery and a long recovery, this book is a must. InknBeans Press has assembled a book form donating writers and artists around the world in response to learning that a 14 year old lad named Gage Bailey has an ameloblastoma (tumor of the mandible or to be more precise, a rare, benign tumor of odontogenic epithelium (ameloblasts, or outside portion, of the teeth during development) much more commonly appearing in the lower jaw than the upper jaw. While these tumors are rarely malignant or metastatic, and progress slowly, the resulting lesions can cause severe abnormalities of the face and jaw. Additionally, because abnormal cell growth easily infiltrates and destroys surrounding bony tissues, wide surgical excision is required to treat this disorder.) Knowing that the recovery is long and the results may be disfiguring, this group of humanists contributed works to a book specifically written for Gage for him to while away his hours of recovery, knowing that there are many well wishers out there and that he is brave and in their thoughts and prayers.

The result is this enormously successful book that blends poetry, some fine illustrations (drawings by Jennifer Barstow, Dvora Swickle, and photocollages from Ireland), poems (several by Vickie Johnstone who also contributes excerpts from her popular Kiwi adventure stores and some new works written especially for Gage0 Short stories about vampires, trampolines and space travel, flying airplanes as an animal project, dust bunnies, zombies, dragons, recipes for pizza etc, medical humor (dilate= to live long, benign = what we want when we are eight, etc), tender stories about finding pictures in the attic of a dangerous surgery performed years ago found by a completely healthy girl - the list goes on and on.

As the InknBeans Press writes, `When things go wrong, when we hurt, when we're sad, it's good to know that we're not alone. It helps to know someone cares.' The profits from this endeavor will go to helping other children who are facing surgery or treatment which require a long recovery, primarily through Ronald McDonald House. All of that is reason enough to support this project and buy this book, but an other really fine reason is that this is one of the better collections of stories for youngsters that is available. It is very fine reading and a very touching concept. Grady Harp, April 12

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Inspiration..... May 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Sometimes it's really hard to decide whether or not you want to purchase a book that you hear people talk about. Not knowing for sure whether what they say about it is true. You want to see for yourself, but is it REALLY worth the money?
The Gage Project is worth more than its selling price because The Gage Project is more than just a book. It is Hope to a child that feels like they are going through an illness alone. It is inspiration to a family, knowing that there truly are people that come together to help others. The Gage Project is like a big hug. It embraces. It gives you a warm feeling. It gives you a sense of being. You feel strength knowing that there are so many people with good hearts dedicating and donating their time, talents and hard work to put together such a masterpiece.
OK so masterpiece may be overdoing it a little. Or is it? It really depends on how you look at it. When I heard about Gage, and the plans to develop this book, I was honored to be a part of it. Just knowing that I was part of a "family" that was going to make a difference, no matter how big or small, was just a truly amazing feeling!
From cover to cover, you will find Vampires, Were-dust-bunnies, Flying Labradors, and many more exciting stories and poems. Every single story, poem and piece of artwork you will find in this book was donated and accepted as being appropriate for a child, as the book was created for children.
Be a part of something special - Be a part of the Gage Project and help us make a difference in a child's life. It is definitely worth every penny, and then some.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Gift Ever June 27, 2012
Format:Paperback
**This review is from my son, Gage Bailey, age fourteen.

Hello! My name is Gage Bailey. I am fourteen and I have autism, even though it doesn't bother me like it seems to bother other people. I also have a condition called Ameloblastoma. Basically, this is a tumor inside my jaw bone. We found out about my tumor last year. My mom writes books and she has lots of friends who also write. When her friends and her publishing company found out that I might have to have surgery to get rid of my tumor, they came up with a plan. They decided to write a book and give a copy to kids who are recovering from surgery. They also donate any money from copies they sell to the Ronald McDonald House for kids and their families.

I was shocked and happy when my copy of the book came in the mail! No one has ever done anything like this for me before. It took me a while to read it all, because there were so many stories inside! The short stories were all awesome. Any kid would love to have this book. Here are some of my favorite stories in the book:

Beauty by Christopher Beck

Danny & the Dream Catchers by Jonathan Gould

Day of the Living Pizza by Vickie Johnstone

The Enemy by Robert F. DeBurgh

Humanitarian by Susan Wells Bennett

Zombie Juice by DM and MA Drake

And so many more! I loved all the stories because they came from people who care. If you know a kid who may need surgery with a long, boring hospital stay, I think you should buy them this book. It will help pass the time and put a smile on their face! It sure put a big one on mine! I want to thank all the authors, illustrators, editors, and Inknbeans Press for putting this wonderful book together to help me and other kids. It's the best gift I've ever received.
