Face-meltingly good.,
This review is from: Galant Bassoon (Audio CD)
A must have for any bassoon fan (all 3 of you!), or any fan of early music. This is a gorgeous and balanced collection of Telemann, CPE and JS Bach at their best. Wilkie is silken, smooth and powerful, with a creamy old-school sound meeting a new-school appreciation for this era of music. He makes high bassoon playing sound so easy, and showcases the full range of this creepy and under-appreciated instrument in a way that will make you melt. Peres Da Costa glides across the harpsichord effortlessly, providing perfect accompaniment, rhythm and playful musical banter between the two, with Boersma's rock-solid bass accompaniment beefing up most of the pieces so seamlessly that you will forget he's even there. The three just work so well together. I have been listening to this for 3 weeks now, and it's worth it for the CPE solo (originally flute) sonata alone. Other favourites are the Telemann A minor Soave (oh the high note!!) and the JS Bach E minor sonata (particularly the last movement). I can't get enough.
