Book Description

Nina Sheridan’s on a timeout adventure in the Colorado Mountains. She needs distance from her clueless fiancé, distance to decide whether she wants to spend the rest of her life with a man who doesn’t care enough to learn how she takes her coffee.

Arriving in a blinding snowstorm at the A-Frame she rented, she comes face to face with the most amazing man she’s ever seen. Minutes later, when he kicks her out of his house, she goes head to head with him.

Beyond angry because she’s flown half a world away to start her timeout adventure, not to mention her sinuses hurt, she heads back down the mountain and ends up in a ditch. Unable to extricate herself, she gives up, hopes for rescue and falls asleep in the backseat.

The next morning she wakes up in the amazing man’s bed and she’s sick as a dog.

Holden Maxwell spends days nursing her back to health and then he spends the next two weeks trying to convince her to take her Colorado adventure further, in other words, make it permanent and take a gamble on him.

Nina has a tough time fighting her attraction to Max, especially when it seems all Max’s friends, her mother and stepdad and the whole town want them together and both she and Max get embroiled in the murder of Max’s ex-friend and the town of Gnaw Bone’s most detested resident – a man everyone has motive to kill, especially Max.

Editorial Reviews

"Ashley delivers a deeply emotional second installment of the Chaos contemporary romance series (after Own the Wind)... Punctuated by blistering-hot sex scenes and fascinating glimpses into the tough world of motorcycle clubs, this romance also delivers true heart and emotion, and a story that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned." (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review, on Fire Inside)

About the Author

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

THE GAMBLE by Kristen Ashley.

Nina was raised in the U.S. but spent several years in England which gave her an English accent. Her past boyfriends were jerks, thieves, cheaters, and beaters. Recently she became engaged to Niles who doesn't listen to her, doesn't think about her, doesn't worry about her, and never calls her. He is a workaholic who watches TV when not working. Nina planned a vacation without him to have a time-out to evaluate their relationship. She booked two weeks in an A-Frame house in the mountains in Colorado. Max lives there and rents it out when he's away on construction jobs. His rental agent made a mistake. Nina shows up during a snowstorm at night. Max is there. She doesn't want to, but she ends up staying there with him due to weather and other circumstances.

This is the second book I've read by this author. I really liked "Sweet Dreams," but I can't say the same about this book. It started out good, but slowly got weak. By the end I lost interest in Nina. The main characters are Macho Mountain Man Max and uptight, low self-image Nina. The only thing interesting about her was that she was quick to retaliate with anger and insults on behalf of others when she saw an injustice. Max chuckles a lot and is amused by her.

The author relies too much on "inaccurate assumptions to create conflict." See Spoilers below for examples. I could handle that if it were about minor things in the story, but I didn't like it as the major reason for repeated conflicts between the main couple. The result was she treated him bad. "Sweet Dreams" was much better. In SD the guy would be a jerk and say something bad which was a legitimate reason for the girl to be confused, angry, or hurt.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad but not that great either. October 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
2.5 Stars

I wasn't too sure whether I wanted to give this such a high rating because being my 5th Kristen Ashley book, it just didn't do it for me, much.

The storytelling is as usual very well done. However, it wasn't very well edited. That is a big problem for me. Also the story felt so... jumbled and kind of all over the place, and there was just to much of this:

-This is just an example, not a actual excerpt from the book. But I'm sure you'll get my drift.-

Max, the Hero, for example will open the door to his jeep for the h, but then we'd have to read how he opened the door for her, walked around to the other side to get into the driver's seat, then get into said driver's seat, buckle his seat belt, put the key in the ignition, start the vehicle, check his mirrors, put his boot on the gas, press down on the gas pedal, then finally drive the hell away.

Good God! A person can only take so much. I don't need to know every single, minute, menial detail, that was lacking in interest. I don't care if he had to walk to the couch, bend his knees to sit on the couch, lean over to untie his left side boot, pull it off, roll off his socks then lean over and untie his right side boot and start that shit all over again.

Read my words: Sometimes less is more. Max just took his shoes off. The end.

Don't get me wrong, I like the way Ashley tells a story, I like her alpha males, I like how normal and flawed her characters are, but I cannot deal with the extra bits of info that are unnecessary.

I'm already feeling drained from writing this review. That actually saddens me.

Also, I have an issue with the way she dealt with a one of the characters who had been sexually assaulted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, suspenseful, sexy start to a loved series.... December 8, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
1st bk in the Colorado Series. Max and Nina's story takes place in Gnaw Bone, Colorado. Nina is Tate's lawyer in bk 2 Sweet Dreams. Nina is charming with her British accent and loveable personality. Max is probably a tiny bit tamer than the other 2 rugged alpha males in this series, sweet and loveable but still badass, protective, possessive and HOT. The way he takes care of Nina when she get the flu melted me and I got a heart on for Max early on in this story. Certainly no lack of chemistry, Max and Nina definitely burn up the sheets. Max is probably my next fav hero of this series with Tate (Sweet Dreams) being numero uno. As always KA writes wonderful, interesting fun side characters. In a town called Gnaw Bone how could there not be -LOL! There are several plots, an intriguing suspenseful twist, and the lurking wonder about Max's past that haunts the story. Never fear - all ends well with a great HEA for Nina and Max. Wonderful lengthy epilogue that takes this cast down the road a few years with a satisfying view of what their future holds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good! December 4, 2012
By Vasso
Format:Kindle Edition
I gave this story only 4 stars, it was really good, especially certain parts of it. I didn't have a problem with all the F bombs that were dropped, but what I did have a problem with was all the unnecessary detail like so many others had mentioned.

I have never read a story before where they are ALWAYS making coffee. Every second or third page, someone is offering to make coffee and that got really old and tiresome. Also...the descriptions of the rooms, the clothes, what they ate....way too much information.

The sex was amazing and why I gave the story 4 stars. This story was too long, could have cut out a few hundred pages. I was glad that I read it. I was my first Kristen Ashley story and I'm sure that I will end up reading more.

More About the Author

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
