Mindfulness for children... of all ages!
on January 12, 2012
I was in the shop at the National Gallery of Victoria a couple of weeks ago when we came across a couple of Tullet's other books: The Book with a Hole and The Game of Mix-up Art. They were fun, but when I handed this to my 7 year old and asked him to trace the green line with his eyes closed, magic happened. He went very quiet (this was in a very busy shop on a Sunday mind you) and traced the line
for three whole minutes.
This was a revelation to me. I've tried to teach him some form of mindfulness meditation, but rarely gotten anywhere with it. This book helps children settle at bedtime. My son loves to read - often past his bedtime. But I have told him, "this is the only book you can have in bed once the lights go out". I've tried it myself too. Tracing this line really takes concentration and the will to keep your eyes closed, and of course the willingness to give yourself a few precious moments of relaxed concentration.
