Book Description

“All you ever thought about athletes, the Olympics, training and what it means to win, to fail, is turned on its head by Carver-Dias. Her writing evokes strong emotion but her style is lean and economical.” – Deborah Serravalle

“You will never think of competitive sports in quite the same way. This book is a revelation.” – Jim Bennett, author of “Behind the Lime Kilns”

“Claire is not only a competent writer with her educational background and communications expertise, she knows of what she writes from personal experience. She can take what is in the emotional 'hard to explain' part of an athlete and put it down on paper.” Guy Scholz, author of “Between the Sheets: Creating Curling Champions”

The Games is literary fiction that explores the dark side of athletic pursuits. The novel follows six Olympic hopefuls in various sports as they claw their way to a berth on their national teams. Against the backdrop of their physical and spiritual striving is the tale of Sam, the disaffected brother of an Olympic rower. Isolated and rudderless, he falls under the sway of a social activist and terrorist who has his own insidious plans for the Games. The six Olympic hopefuls are Jayna in basketball, Lexi in rowing, Andrea in kayaking, Vincent in swimming, Yasmine in the marathon, and JJ in rowing. To make it to the top, each must overcome their personal demons. In the process, their bodies, dreams, and relationships will falter and crumble as they fight for a spot at the Olympic Games. In an arena this cutthroat, few will make it, while the rest will have to justify a lifetime’s investment in attaining an athletic prowess that eventually failed to make the cut. Juxtaposed alongside the athletes’ stories is the sordid tale of Sam. As he knows all too well, there are many different kinds of losing, from losing the race to losing oneself. In his search for God and stability, what he encounters are their opposites. His own involvement with terrorism becomes a violent and pathetic attempt to redeem himself from personal failures. This stirring fictionalized account drips with authenticity from the author’s own experiences as an Olympic athlete. Ultimately, The Games is an absorbing tale of false gods, from the search for belonging and redemption to loneliness and personal suffering. In their quest for athletic glory, these ultra-competitive athletes will learn a lifetime’s knowledge of what it means to win and to fail.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Costs of Competition October 2, 2012
Format:Paperback
Read this book. You will be inside the heads of various athletes. When they are training. When they are competing. When are they relaxing? With the exception of Jayna, never. This level of driven dedication makes some individuals, remarkably strong, potentially unpleasant to live with. You will live with them.
You will also live with a loser, an underachiever, the second-best elder son. You will be inside his head too, as he is gradually manipulated into thinking a cowardly act is an essential move against a malignant society.
You will meet the coach who takes advantage of female athletes. You will meet that athlete. You will feel the losses as well as the wins.
You will never think of competitive sports in quite the same way. This book is a revelation.
It is also extremely well written. Read this book. You are in for an amazing experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Olympian Life-Lessons October 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
The Games takes you inside the mind space of high performance athletes and those close to these Olympic hopefuls. The question being asked is - what's really important?

Pursuing an Olympic medal is a worthy goal, but losing one's soul in the process can tarnish any gold, silver or bronze achievement. The life-lessons an Olympian can gleen from their pursuit can be one of the most invaluable learning environments to grow and develop one's soul - if perspective can be kept. Just as synchronized swimming is a delicate balancing act of being physically fit combined with the artistic flare of a grammy-winning artist, The Games explores the delicate balance of pursuing Olympic gold and maintaining one's integrity. If anyone can articulate the 'mental games' of an Olympian it is Claire.

Claire is not only a competent writer with her educational background and communications expertise, she knows of what she writes from personal experience. She can take what is in the emotional 'hard to explain' part of an athlete and put it down on paper. With this insight and skill Claire gives the reader nugget upon nugget of the 'inner games' that Olympians seek to manage or balance. Claire is a great story-teller and I am thrilled she has taken this gift and put it in story form.

Get your highlighter out, you will not be disappointed. The Games is an Olympian novel written by an Olympian veteran of both the Olympics and the game of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Narrative, Lean Prose October 4, 2012
Format:Paperback
Many novels are innovative; they push the literary envelope in new and different ways. They surprise us. Unfortunately, these reads, which often garner literary praise, fall short when it comes to the narrative and fail to engage us emotionally. The Games is one of those rare reads that is both innovative and engaging.

As stated in the synopsis, "...the novel follows six Olympic hopefuls in various sports as they claw and bleed their way to a berth on their national teams. Against the backdrop of their physical and spiritual striving is the tale of Sam, the disaffected brother of an Olympic rower. Isolated and rudderless, he falls under the sway of a social activist and terrorist who has his own insidious plans for the Games."

All you ever thought about athletes, the Olympics, training and what it means to win, to fail, is turned on its head by Carver-Dias. Her writing evokes strong emotion but her style is lean and economical.

I loved The Games and highly recommend this book to those who want a well-written, unique story. I look forward to much more from Ms. Carver-Dias.
