Bruce Canfield's new book, "The M1 Garand Rifle" is simply amazing! I think this is the current title holder for the best gun book ever published. That's my initial assessment, based on several factors. Here are some of my observations in the few hours I have spent with the book so far:

¡ It's 872 pages long - A tome of Garand information with no comparison
¡ Photos are color throughout, wherever color photos were available
¡ It features profuse use of inset marking photos, which is a feature I love to see
¡ The book is in portrait format, which is easier to reference, yet it still presents the rifles and inset photos in a pleasing layout that is more often experienced in a landscape formatted book
¡ The detail is incredible
¡ Bruce must have thousands of hours in this book
¡ I like how accessories are featured throughout the book
¡ Photography is top notch
¡ This book will be very difficult to top, and I don't think anyone will attempt to do so - This is the authoritative reference on the subject that will be studied for decades to come

I am among 58 who are listed as contributing to the book, however I do not have any major connection to it, and this is all Bruce Canfield's work. My contribution was extremely minor, in that I reviewed the Field Manual and Technical Manual commentary, and provided a couple of pictures. Whenever a good firearm reference book like this is written, many collectors are consulted for photos and information. It's what helps the author to make it as comprehensive as it can be at the time it's written.

Bruce should be extremely proud of this book. Wow! It's really exceptionally great.

The best, most complete, detailed book on the M1, I have seen. Excellent photos detailing minor changes in parts. Detailed history of related prototypes.

Bruce Canfield's books are invariably well-researched and complete. What is more important, he has the ability to make topic(s) that can be very dry & technical [ie: "b-o-r-i-i-i-n-g!"] into something engaging and worthwhile. If this book has a problem it is that it is a MIGHTY TOME, and it really should have been broken down into two volumes to make reading it less of a [physical] chore. Due to the book's large size & substantial composition [ie, it's a quality binding on premium grade paper stock], you pretty much HAVE to sit at a table to read it: it's just not a comfortable item to keep on the bedside table to peruse before lights-out. Ah, the price of success! ;-) I have several of Canfield's other books, and this one is truly his masterpiece. Worth every penny!

Holy cow!! This is far and away the coolest book on the M1 Garand! It gives a most in depth story of its development and the guns and manufacturers it competed with to come to be THE battle rifle of WWII and beyond. Sadly, it shows that the government has not changed much in politics, but a very intriguing narrative. I love the breakdown in the years of production and usage. I was able to find anything and everything on the M1 and am not close to fully reading it as of 1-1-14. Love that it is a hardback with dust jacket cover. If my gun ever fails, I am sure the book could harm someone as a thrown object and save my life as I am pretty sure it will stop a 30-06 with its 3lbs and 2" thick heft!!! The only book to buy, even though I already owned "the complete guide of the m1 and m1 carbine" by Canfield and the owners guide by Mr. Duff......own this and buy no other!!!

Hi, this is the most researched book ever on the M1 Garand. Canfield knows his stuff and combines a ton of information from numerous sources in one book. If you have an interest in the history of firearms or the M1 Garand this is the new "bible".I think that the printing/binding leave something to be desired in such a great, and heavy book. I have Mr. Canfields other books and they were printed in the US and they, after 10 years still look like new. Just a quibble because I love books, but I'm happy with my purchase and recommend it to all students of firearms history.

Very detailed, plan to spend some considerable time devouring this one. I was struck by the fact that the red tape and inefficiency of anything involving the government was so pronounced even in the 1920's. It's a wonder we even had this weapon given the myriad attemmpts to discredit the design.

The reference material is excellent, and this is probably the most valuable book to have if you collect or wish to research the Garand rifle.

Wonderful book on the M1. Full of historical data and information. Lots of pictures too. If there is fault it is that the book is almost too big, but that would be nit picking.
