Book Description

In a secluded subdivision in the small Alabama town of Thriftson County stands an inconspicuous house surrounded by forces of evil as compelling as they are mysterious. David Slate, an unremarkable high-school student, has just settled in to the new home when he finds his already unstable life swiftly turned upside down. While struggling to make friends and survive in the hostile public education system, his familial life begins to come completely unhinged as he confronts the impossible history of his new house and the neighborhood’s homicidal garbage men. With school bullies, the garbage men, and even his own parents pitted violently against him at every turn, David is forced to independently fight an internal battle as he strives to discover the truth behind the folkloric curse of his house and simultaneously maintain his own sanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read January 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the most enthralling book I have read in quite some time. I started reading it casually, and I quickly found myself completely engrossed in the pages, taking every spare moment out of my day to find out what would happen next in the rapidly twisting plot. The vocabulary portrayed in this novel is exquisite, and in times of high suspense the reader feels the intense emotions that the narrator is experiencing. The images painted in the reader's mind rival those of the best books I have ever read, and the author uses these images to trigger different senses. With this trickery of the mind the author makes what happens in the book even more believable and frightening, leaving the reader in awe as he/she comes to the conclusion of the book. With this book, Travis Smith established himself as an extremely prolific writer, and I am looking forward to more of his works in the future. I highly recommend this book to any reader, and promise that the time you take to read this novel will be well worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great gripping read February 21, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Garbage Men, albeit not extremely scary, has a great story and a gripping paranoid style. David may not be your favorite main protagonist and while he may seem to be, at first, your typical abused character trope, those points perfectly fall into place in this well-executed and striking first book by Travis Smith. It is definitely a mesmerizing page-turner and a remarkable novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner January 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Extremely well written story with all the ingredients for a great read. The reader is quickly drawn to the characters with curiosity and concern for the outcome. Fast moving and gripping tale that I devoured cover to cover in one sitting! Travis Smith has proven himself a gifted writer and I anxiously await his next work. Readers of Haruki Murakami will totally enjoy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing bad to say! January 17, 2012
By Mallory
Format:Perfect Paperback
I usually have difficulty with 'getting into' a book, especially at the start. However, within the first few pages, I found myself excited to be reading. As with any great story, it's easy to turn page after page without a sense of time. I ended up reading about half of the book in one sitting! It was addicting and I couldn't put it away! I certainly recommend this book to any reader interested in a real mind boggling plot and a truly well-written story. The characters are emotional, relatable, and it will feel as though you actually know them. On top of this book being well-written, I was very impressed with the author. He is not only a college student, but also has a job AND published a book! I am truly amazed with his work and look forward to reading more from him!

I received this book as a gift. I started reading it that night. I simply could not put the book down. I couldn't wait to get to the next page to see what was going to happen. The characters were very intriguing and the stories surrounding them. This book is definitely a page turner and hard to put down. I finished the book by lunch time the next day. I loved the book and can't wait to see what Travis is going to write next. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It doesn't matter what type of book you normally like to read, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling May 26, 2012
By Jeep
Format:Perfect Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Garbage Men is a compelling novel with characters that readers can easily identify with. It is a strongly written novel that I recommend for anyone who is interested in psychological thrillers or just looking for something good to read. With non stop thrills, I couldn't put this book down and, at the end, I had chills. This novel is possibly one of the best debut novels I've read in a long time and I look forward to more by Travis Smith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and brilliant April 20, 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback
I couldn't wait to get my copy of this book. It was so compelling that I couldn't put it down. If it hadn't been for my bedtime, I would have read it cover to cover on day one! I finished it by noon the next day. This author has a wonderful future as a novelist. The talent and character development were impressive for a first novel. I find myself eager to read the next one and hope there will be another after that.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Garbage Men by Travis Smith
I enjoyed the book. It was kind of slow here and there but I still liked it for the most part.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible
I didn't like it because it was about some troubled kid with terrible parents and went hay wire, we see enough of this in today's news.
