5.0 out of 5 stars Don't pay $100 for the book! September 12, 2008
Format:Paperback
A piece of advice for those who want to buy this book: you can order it from the website [...] and pay $34.95 + $10 s&h. The prices on Amazon and Half.com are outrageous!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Godsend for our Gluten/Dairy/Corn free family! January 4, 2005
By LaLa
Format:Paperback
This book was not advertised as a Gluten free book, but naturally is free of gluten and dairy. It was also free of other high allergens for the most part, such as all the gluten containing grains, most corn, and more.

It was easy for us to jump into this diet that is based on pasture raised meat, vegetables, and fruits, nuts etc. A produce based way of eating that feels healthy and tastes good! Thank you for this blessing! I really enjoy the sections teaching me to make condiments at home as well as the base meals. My 4 year old daughter with Celiacs does very well on this diet. I highly recommend this book to anyone raising children with many food sensitivities as well as to anyone who just wants to be healthier in general!

5.0 out of 5 stars Think you can't live without grains/dairy? Yes you can! October 29, 2005
Format:Paperback
Rachel Matesz has truly saved my life. I discovered I was allergic to wheat and dairy, yet struggled with sticking to a diet with neither. This HUGE book will give you a ton of recipes, each with variations, using fruits, veggies, meat, eggs, poultry, fish, nuts & nut butters, coconut milk and other paleo condiments. Many, many recipes for meats & veggies, plus time-saving protein spreads and creams for fruit for when you don't feel like eating meat for meal. I LOVE her mocha frosty recipe, protein-nut spreads on fruit, and her soups. I've easily tried over 30 recipes and each was awesome. You'll never miss wheat/grains/dairy ever again!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Kitchen "Bible" December 4, 2005
Format:Paperback
As the mother of a child with food allergies and a health food fanatic, I cannot find one thing "wrong" with this book. Which is crazy because I can usually find something absent or misinforming in all cookbooks.

The recipes are stellar and easy. My family loves everything I have made from this book.

I reccomend it to ALL parents going gluten/dairy/soy/corn free. You must have this book. Not just for the recipes but for the priceless information about your food as well.

I can't thank Rachel and Don Matesz enough for putting all of their incredible knowledge and expertise into this fantastic book. It is much more than a cookbook, it is a way of living. Their thorough introductory chapters explain the diet that we as human beings were designed to eat. Then they move on to how to set up a natural foods kitchen, giving an extensive list of recommendations on foods and kitchen tools. Just these two sections of the book would make it worth the price. But then there are the tons of EXCELLENT, EASY (no ridiculously long prep work), and TASTY recipes, which are all grain-free and dairy-free. When I follow this diet I feel just FANTASTIC! No more stomach bloating. No more allergies. My skin looks great.

Another thing that I love about this book is the down-to-earth tone that is used throughout. Don and Rachel are REAL people and admit their past mistakes (they talk about their problems with their past macrobiotic and vegetarian diet). And their enthusiasm for eating well shines throughout.

My only criticism? I want another book ASAP! I would absolutely love it if they wrote another book dedicated to feeding babies and children. I hope it is a project they'll consider one day.

If you only buy one book today make it the Garden of Eating. You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful and practical book with delicious recipes! October 22, 2005
By Veritas
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I use this book a lot for the yummy recipes (the meatloaf and sesame-buttered seafood are easy to make and so delicious). I found the section on "Tools of the Trade" very helpful to get the essentials tools that really enhance my cooking experience (like the inexpensive Japanese caddie knife that makes slicing and chopping such an easy task). I also use the book for resources on where to buy herbs, spices, etc. The menu planning and sound nutrition information are invaluable. This book has helped me get organized in the kitchen so that I can cook with more pleasure and enjoy the recipes that are offered by the author. It's a great book to give to a beginner, or any level cook, really! It's a labor of love and it shows. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever! June 25, 2007
Format:Paperback
This is more than a cookbook, it a a guide to everything about food that you should know. Rachel and Don have done a terrific job in preparing a comprehensive handbook. The recipes are great. My favorite part is the fact that they give you variations on each recipe, plus they are easy to modify for yourself.
Also, the information on how we should be eating has been researched and presented well. If nothing else, rereading those sections will keep you to this "diet". They prove that it isn't really a diet, but a lifestyle choice. They also provide many tips on where to get hard to find products, or products at a lower price. The kitchen tips have saved me time and money. I am an experienced cook, and found several common sense things in the book that I never even thought of. The down to earth style is very informative.
This is the book for anyone looking for a healthier way to live. The results I have seen, both in myself and others, have been tremendous. I recommend it to anyone!

Format:Paperback
I don't even like to cook very much and I simply love this book. It has all the wisdom of nourishing traditions, but this book feel more accessable, more do-able. I am allergic to wheat and dairy and try to avoid all grain, so this is my ultimate recipe guide. I am thrilled....no grains, sugar or wheat, and still delicious! Excellent, excellent book....worth every penny...
