Editorial Reviews

Review

What better way to get children interested in gardening than with a fun-filled, attractively laid-out book on the subject? Full of zany ideas clearly illustrated and explained in child-friendly language, this is sure to sow some horticultural seeds to mature in later life as an enjoyable hobby. Dinosaur worlds, desert landscapes, painted pots, herb sachets and garden mobiles intermingle with the more serious subjects such as vegetable growing. All presented in a wacky child-appealing format, this is sure to appeal even if gardening doesn't. So encourage them outside and let them discover for themselves the wonders of nature with these imaginative projects. - Lucy Watson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Subtitled "Make your Own Garden with 50 Green Activities," this slender volume is packed with clever, creative projects for the budding horticulturist.

With the book's instructions, a child might plant a mini-earthscape in which plastic dinosaurs roam or tiny toy trucks labor. He or she might create "grass people," apparently cousins of Mr. Potato Head-but with grass coiffures needing frequent trimmings. The young reader may decide to raise cherry tomatoes in a hand-painted pot. Or to grow fragrant herbs and make a catnip sock toy for kitty.

The beauty of this volume is its clarity and focus; projects are described with photos and a minimum of words. The projects chosen are basic (not many materials required; can be done indoors or out) yet fun and imaginative, and the instructions are thorough enough that school-age children can carry out the projects with a minimum of adult help.

Green thumbs up for "The Gardening Book" and the hours of fun it promises.

My kids love this book! We use it year to year, its great for all ages with lots of activities for the kids to do when its gardening season. It always gets my kids interested in what we are doing in the grade, and gives them a little something to do on the side while I work. Its also full of age appropriate information about plants and how things grow.

I gave this to some kids in my neighborhood who loved to help in my garden and were moving. I like the artsy science things but had hoped for a few more in the ground type garden things too. But maybe this appeals more. Nice gift regardless.
