Book Description

Elven detective Saxon Kirby is under pressure to find out who left a gnawed body at a Las Vegas tourist attraction. He already knows what is responsible: a werewolf. The Keeper of the Vegas werewolves is supposed to control his charges, just as Keepers have kept vampires, shifters and other paranormal races in check for over a century. But the local Keeper is weak and there is nothing to stop the murderous wolf—except Saxon.

Saxon's investigation leads him to Calleigh McGowan, a half-werewolf, half-Elven dancer who entrances him with her sensual moves and promise of carnal pleasure. She's a sexy distraction Saxon doesn't need—even if Calleigh has her own reasons for hunting down the rogue werewolf. But in order to catch the killer, they'll have to put their lives—and hearts—on the line.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoy Heather Graham, but this was horrible November 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'd like to start by saying that I've never given a negative review before. If I don't like something, I typically chalk it up to subjective taste and leave it at that.

With that said, I've read a bunch of Heather Graham books. She's one of a handful of authors that I typically buy without reading reviews because I enjoy her writing, stories and characters.

However, if I didn't know better, I'd swear she didn't do the writing on this. The characters were nothing more than cardboard cut-outs. They had no depth and no 'character.' The plot was so thin and transparent that I knew how it ended before I finished chapter 1. Not just the romance, but the identity of the bad guy and what Saxon gets asked to lead at the end. Everything was written in such a heavy handed manner it was impossible to miss. Like another reviewer, I'm glad this one was free. I understand this is a series set-up, but this was nothing more than a prologue stretched and padded with fluff to make a small novella.

While the concept is interesting, I won't buy any in this series unless the writing gets back up to Heather Graham's usual standard.

If this is your first Heather Graham book, please pass on this one. Instead try one of her Krewe Series or one from the haunted books (seance, the haunted, etc). Those are much better books to use to gauge if you like her writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad of an intro but... November 19, 2012
By Heather
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I want to give this a 2.5 stars really...You get a gloss over of the what is going on and what is the set up for the rest of the series but...there were a lot of plot holes, almost like swiss cheese. Not too much chracter develpoment or too much of an in depths description of the underworld and how they adapted to human society or the main character for that matter. Now, there might be a method to the authors madness in just giving snipits of background story and such to get readers interested but as a new reader I would like a little more and this story was short, almost too short. What got me was ok, this detective who is Elven is on a mission to right the wrongs as to underworld races being kept on a leash with rules and codes to go by, especially when "S" hits the fan in Vegas and werewolves are the suspects. There is a good lead up to what the bad guy is up to but the villian the main fight scene wasn't bad but it fet rushed and all of a sudden the heroine Callehe (sorry if I spelled this wrong) and the hero Saxon in the end hook up and are head over heals in love???? Huh? If their attraction was building up when they first met to the end I would get that but not "hey we beat the bad guys, lets go have sex!" without any warning, didn't make sence. I might give the first actual book in the series a try to see if the story is better developed then this little intro story.

1.0 out of 5 stars only one, cause it couldn't be none December 4, 2012

Oh my! This stunk (apologies to the author, I mean it in the nicest way possible) but it was really bad. It did have a story line, I'll give ti that, but otherwise, ti was just a mish-mash of various fables and folktales, riding the wave of current interest in sparkly vampires and hunky werewolves. How many creepy non humans can I throw into one story? Did they pay more for each one she managed to write into the plot? The plot was drivel too - I did say it had one,it just wasn't a very good one - no surprises, no excitement. You can see who the bad guys are from the first chapter and even the 'surprise' ending just seems like it's thrown in there to try for a twist. We'll call this a waste of time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too fast, too soap opera-y December 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The prequel to The Keepers L.A. paranormal romance series. The couple focus is on Kirby Saxon and Calleigh McGowan with the story taking place in Las Vegas.

This copy was provided by the publisher, Harlequin.

My Take
Oh brother, this was a touch dorky and much too dramatic, always on highly revved. I don't know if Graham did this on purpose to keep readers reading, or if it's just how it turned out. She keeps the action flying so fast that I barely caught who was what. I'd like to see what Graham could do if she slowed down a mite and filled in with a softer pace. I swear I think Saxon solved the case in just hours as he rushed here, there, and everywhere.

I want to like the characters, but, again, Graham rushed us through the story so fast, I didn't have a chance to get past the soap opera-ish dialog.

Saxon has just come to Dirk's to meet Calleigh only to learn she's disappeared and he automatically thinks it's payback for his hassling Jimmy? He just had him arrested. WTF.

We never do learn anything more about Joe Moore. Who is Marston Greenwood? Well, other than dead. He is supposedly the reason why the mayor is so upset and his name only appears twice.

The Story
A partially eaten corpse is found and sets off a frenzy of killing, resulting in the mayor demanding resolution. The pressure is on Saxon to solve this crime, but he's more concerned with a series of mysterious disappearances and deaths. And he knows who did it. We don't actually get handed any clues, so we can think alongside him. I reckon we'd be too slow for the pace Graham sets.

Ends with a large group of Keepers insisting on forming a worldwide council of Keepers with Saxon leading.

The Characters
Calleigh McGowan, a.k.a.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Gatekeeper
Not a bad novella. I expected more romance from it. There was absolutely none. The heroine was barely in the story.
There were also quite a few grammatical errors. Read more

Worst book I have ever read. The author has lost her mind - or a leprechaun is controlling her mind.
