As entertaining as this show is, it also provides great insight and education into many different weapons.

It really gets into all parts of shooting, while having the reality show feel.

History Channel's marksmanship reality competition returns for its third season with "Top Shot: The Gauntlet." In a somewhat polarizing second season, many viewers were either delighted by or disappointed by the inclusion of additional non-shooting gamesmanship from surprising sources and the emergence of the show's most controversial contestant yet. Purists may want to see this show geared toward the best and most talented candidate winning, but that's not necessarily the way of contemporary reality programming. There is nothing particularly unique about the format of the show which mirrors countless other elimination contests across the television landscape. It seems to be inescapable!

With the subject matter being guns and recreational shooting, however, the show really caters to a widespread sport that you don't see embraced very often in traditional programming. Thus, lovers of target practice and marksmanship have a show that they can call their own. It's not an exclusive club, however, those that love reality competitions but have never been to a shooting range can also have a bit of fun. The show has the expected reality quirks that you either embrace or loathe. There's quick cut editing for dramatic affect, enthusiastic but obvious commentary from the host ("It's a hit" Survivor alum Colby Donaldson might exclaim despite the fact that we've just watched the impact), and eliminations that are based just as much on politics and game-playing as opposed to outright talent (due to team competitions).

That being said, "The Gauntlet" seems a little more straight-forward than the previous season--a return to basics, if you will.

This show is very enjoyable for my kids and I to watch on the xbox. The competition aspects are the best I've seen from any reality show. The challenges are very well done and look like a lot of fun. I think that buying the whole season is the only way to go and it's good to see that they have priced it reasonably.

I'm gettting this DVD as soon as it comes out. It's worth seeing every episode again in my humble opinion. There is a little unsportsmanlike drama with one of the competitors, but by and large, the contestants are very likeable and skilled. The competitions themselves are something shooters and non-shooters alike will find fun, and many of the stories and conversations off of the range are also interesting, with the exception of the one character already mentioned. My guess is that you'll tire of him quickly as well, but fortunately, the standup behavior of the rest of the competitors more than makes up for him.

And for me personally, my favorite competitor won in an exciting finale, so that makes this DVD a must for me. I'm hoping that the DVD itself will have added bonus features that will make it even better than the episodes alone, but even if not, they were good enough to get 5 stars from me. I'll try to report back with an update on the DVD as to if it has any bonus features, and if so, what they're like.

If you're a gun aficionado or just a casual fan, this show should be interesting to you. Shooting experts and ordinary people are included on the teams which compete until only one person remains who will win the title of Top Shot and a sizable cash prize. The weapons include other guns from many eras and other weapons such as bow and arrows and even rocks, so the competition is not limited to just who is the best pistol or rifle shot. Most of the time, it is hard to believe that an hour has passed when watching this show. I believe it is currently in season six so this is a good way to catch up. The only downside I know is sometimes the "host" talks a little too much.

Great show. Still mostly shooting with little interaction drama, although Jake added a lot of that in Season 3. I hope they continue to keep the drama low and the weapons/competition as the primary programming goal.
