Editorial Reviews

Perseverance Records is proud to announce the reissue of the soundtrack to Clint Eastwood's 1977 action film, The Gauntlet. Jerry Fielding has worked with Clint Eastwood on four films and has worked with some other great directors in his career (Peckinpah, Preminger, Irwin Allen, Michael Ritchie) as well as on numerous television series. This is another example of a release many people missed out on from the Warner France reissue released in early 2000s. The beautiful free-form jazz music arrangements make The Gauntlet a respected work that has stood the test of time. Remastered with original album art.

Fielding's music perfectly fits (or makes) the mood of this film. But, it also stands very well on its own - a bluesy, jazzy romp with a bit of a soulful, mid-70's kick that weaves from dramatic and more action-oriented pieces to soulfully contemplative variations of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" that realize it as a somewhat laid-back and down-and-out commentary on the plight of Eastwood's character. The 'mid-70's kick' here is not really funk at all, but vaguely more like Harlem of this period, or maybe a sense of that community...municipality, now There's an aesthetic theme for this movie(!). This CD version (not the import, which I haven't heard) also happens to be a recording of stellar quality - don't be fooled by the low price! Art Pepper and Jon Faddis turn in some blistering sax and trumpet solos and the entire ensemble just swings and jams. Sharp and tight. You won't regret a single second of this disc...until maybe it's over - at a total length of a mere 31:13 it's over all too soon, but not a moment of it is wasted and not a single note is out of place. As a film album it's well on par with anything the equally great Lalo Schifrin ever did. Any jazz or soundtrack fan should have this disc. WAY recommended!

For a long time it was very hard to get this record and if you could find it you would spend over $40. I'm glad to see that something has changed in the ecosystem that has allowed me to get this great soundtrack at a reasonable price.
