Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Brad Clifford's theory was just applied mathematics -- but its implications were too hot for the frozen minds of his superiors. So they buried it -- and him -- under wraps of secrecy.
Then Aubrey Philipsz, iconoclast and fellow genius, appeared on the scene to build the Genesis Machine Clifford's theory made possible.
Suddenly, all weapons seemed useless before the previously unimagined power of the Genesis Machine. It could wreck a world or save it -- and the men who ruled that world on a path of disaster now fought to gain control of this new force.
But Clifford and Philipsz had another goal, another dream. They were reaching for the stars!
"In the grand tradition of the classic super-science stories, but with more exciting science and with better writing, too. What more can anyone want?" -- Isaac Asimov --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This was the first book of Hogan's that I picked up, almost twenty years ago. I was amazed by the story Hogan could tell - an intelligent, well thought out scientific thriller, with believeable characters who acted upon real motives. I have been a huge fan of Hogan's ever since, and have a collection which will be complete as soon as Amazon can find the two out-of-print titles I've ordered. Do yourself a favour and buy everything by Hogan you can get your hands on. This man can write!

Format: Hardcover
I read this when it was first published, maybe 3 times. It was the first book by James P. Hogan I ever read and I immediately fell in love with this author. True hard-core science fiction, and with detail in the science that was so believable. When I first read it, some over my head, now as I re-read it, more than 20 years later it still holds the same fascination it did the first time around, but the science of K-Rotations, functions, Hi-space, 6 dimensional space and shadow space is much easier to grasp.
Dr. Bradley Clifford is cool but Aub or Morelli is someone you would want to meet and go hang out with.
The characters have depth and the story gets a lot in for such a quick read.

I WANT A DARN BIAC!!!

Format: Mass Market Paperback
It's interesting how a book written in 1978 that depicts events set in the 2000s describes advances in technology and portrays an alternate future (present). The characters are very reminiscent of a number of academic scientists (and the bureaucrats they sometimes come up against) who I know, which makes for an entertaining read.
