Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Intrepid twins Coke and Pep(si) McDonald are back in the third installment of Gutman’s popular Genius Files series, chased around the country by comical villains as they decipher clues, wield weapons, and experience the curiosities of American geography. Our omniscient narrator, with tongue in cheek, continually breaks the fourth wall to address readers directly, catching us up on the twins’ previous adventures and unfurling the new ones. And although the backstory is a bit confused, the silly, improbable, episodic thrills are the main attraction, and they don’t disappoint. This time out, the McDonald family RV is driving through the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, stopping at every peculiar landmark (from the world’s largest frying pan to the respective birthplaces of the twins’ eponymous soda-pop names) to learn a history lesson and rescue one another from sudden death. A final face-off at Graceland with the Evil Elvis, who has been tracking them (or has he?), ends with a bang—and a cliff-hanger promise for the next installment. Each chapter includes Google Maps coordinates for readers to follow along. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: This third title in the New York Times best-selling series kicks off with a five-city tour for Gutman as well as a national media campaign, YouTube channel with video content, and more. Grades 5-8. --Thom Barthelmess

More About the Author

This is hard. I'm a pretty regular Jersey guy who spent fifteen years trying to write newspaper articles, magazine articles, screenplays, books for adults, and just about everything else before I discovered the one thing I'm good at--writing fiction for kids. I aim for kids who DON'T like to read, and hopefully the kids who DO like to read will enjoy my stuff too. For all the gory details about me, check out my web site.

You Only Die Twice is the third book in The Genius Files series. I loved this book so much that The Genius Files series has now become one of my most favorite book series ever! I especially enjoyed how the author uses his imagination to keep surprising the reader throughout the book.

The main characters are thirteen-year-old twins, Coke and Pepsi McDonald. Coke and Pepsi are brother and sister geniuses. Because of their genius minds, they belong to a secret program, and many crazy people are trying to kill them. Each book introduces a new villain for Coke and Pepsi to outsmart.

The Genius Files stories always end up being a perfect combination of fantasy and non-fiction. The strange, but true places they visit on their cross-country family vacation are the reality part of the story. There were real photographs of the places, so I could see what they looked like and imagine what it would be like to go there someday. Many adventures take place, as Coke and Pepsi travel with their parents and bad things start to happen. Coke and Pepsi use their genius minds to solve puzzles and ciphers, and to outwit all of the crazy bad guys they encounter. I couldn’t stop reading this book, because I always wanted to see what would happen to Coke and Pepsi next. Every chapter ends at a suspenseful place.

Little boxes on the on the side of the pages gave directions, so I could follow along to real places in each state on Google maps. The McDonald family stopped at the National Jousting Museum and even the site of the World’s Largest Frying Pan! I could hardly believe that there were such places! My favorite stops were the Birthplace of Pepsi (the soft drink) and The World of Coke (the soft drink). Lots of exciting things happen at those two stops.

The Genius Files - You Only Die Twice by Dan Gutman is a great book. The Genius Files is a series of books about twin brother and sister, Coke and Pep, surviving the summer because they are a part of a secret society called the Genius Files. After Coke and Pep figured out that they were part of this secret society, they started on a road trip to their grandmother's wedding, and it hasn't been an easy ride. On the trip the twins go to different places such as Washington DC to see the Abraham Lincoln statue, the birthplace of Pepsicola, the world's largest frying pan and other cool but weird places. While they are on their adventure they are being chased by an evil Elvis impersonator who wants them dead.
The type of audience that would like this book would be people who read action and adventure stories. This book has lots of action and the story moves along really fast. The story is just complicated enough to keep you guessing. An example would be when they were at the Tunnelvision place. Evil Elvis almost hit Coke but he drove into the wall not knowing it was actually a wall. Coke and Pep escaped before Elvis knew what happened.
The thing that stood out to me about this book was that it was not only exciting but also educational because every place they go they give descriptions about the area and the place they are visiting. I thought it was cool that the author did that.
The reason I liked this book was because it is easy to understand what was going on in the story and it was cool to learn about different weird places. It was a fun story and a lot of things were going on. My favorite character was Coke because she has a photographic memory and I thought that was cool. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out in January!

The cover clearly states this book is targeted for ages 8-12. There is an anatomical picture of a woman on page 99 that is not appropriate for that age level, it would not be appropriate if it was a man's anatomy either. We got this book from the library and I am glad I flipped through it before giving it to my kid, and taped a post-it note over the picture. We also discuss the book's contents, some of it is questionable of its educational value since it is so dramatic with the threats of killing running throughout the series. Our family is very picky and we consider this a school-reading type of book for its vocabulary and geography value, but would recommend this for mature older kids or teens, not younger than 10.

i really liked this book. it had interesting plot twists and a wacky style that I'm not familiar with. but it was also going downhill. you see, all the other books didn't have much sexism and stereotypes but both apeared here. sure, why should i care? because we are teaching other kids like me that girls like shopping and need a mans hand. otherwise, i think the parents weren't very realistic and nor where the kids, it made children look ignorant and stubborn. another thing is that coke and pepsi have a similar personallity, bratty but smart, something that is hard to understand
