5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than Oliver! November 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Lionel Bart is chiefly remembered as the songwriter who gave us the legendary musical Oliver! and the title song for the second James Bond film, From Russia With Love. But as this three-CD set amply demonstrates, he was much, much more. Many fans of the 1960s British Invasion like myself fell in love with that music in large part because of the sheer British-ness of the music, and that's what Bart is all about. His major musicals were about small-time Cockney hoods, Restoration-period rakes, Liverpool dockworkers, London during the Blitz and, yes, Dickens' Oliver Twist. His big flop was a musical about Robin Hood. But, along with the equally incredible John Barry, he also was a key player in England's pre-Beatles rock and roll scene. If you love Ray Davies of the Kinks. then Lionel Bart is essential to your collection. For those who already are fans of Bart, the third CD is a treasure: It includes demos for several of his unproduced musicals, several of which are sung by Justin Hayward before he rose to fame and fortune in the Moody Blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars From my Youth April 24, 2013

Memories from the 50's and 60's when I was growing up in England. Also interesting for the early working of the music that became Blitz.
