Book Description

March 8, 2011
A unique illustrated memoir by Sally Wade, the love of George Carlin’s life for ten years, THE GEORGE CARLIN LETTERS: THE PERMANENT COURTSHIP OF SALLY WADE is a collection of never-before-seen writings and artwork by the late great comedian (representing at least 1/3 of the text in the book), woven into Wade’s beautifully told chronicle of the last ten years of their life together. The book provides a rare glimpse into the man behind the legend. George Carlin wrote to Sally daily—notes, postcard, letters…he even started fights on paper; the title is taken from his very last note, which Sally found propped up on her computer upon returning from the hospital the day he died. One of the greatest love stories ever told…hilariously, until the release of this book, no one but Sally has ever seen this side of George Carlin. And everyone is guaranteed to fall in love with both of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars a Lifelong Carlin fan reads with mixed feelings March 8, 2011
Format:Hardcover
As a lifelong fan of George Carlin I could not resist. George's creativity is on full display through this book with his not surprisingly clever but sometimes very surprisingly deeply emotional notes to his girlfriend of a decade. As a writer Sally Wade contributes effective story telling but certainly not enough content for a book, maybe a nice magazine article. The real reason I (and most I assume) would buy this is to read more of George's writing, and that is my problem.

Much of this is very very private and personal and I'm not convinced Mr Carlin would appreciate his love notes being published for profit in his absence. I remember towards the end of his life George responding to quotes attributed to him on the net by saying..if its not in my books or my recordings or videos(DVDs) then I didn't say it. He was proud of the body of his work and I personally think Sally Wade takes great liberty in taking sole writing credit for this book. The note Sally found on her computer "The Permanent Courtship of Sally Wade" which is displayed at the Prologue and which Sally credits for kick starting the book...would have been a great title and a great opener if after that came a book's worth of great story telling and writing by Sally. What we have are private letters written by one of the great men of my time to the last love of his life. In an earlier time the grieving Ms Wade would cherish these notes and perhaps write about her wonderful love story...but in our time, its just easier to open the box copy them all ..add a few pictures and copy and ...instant George Carlin book.

I don't believe writers of words or music should have the work they chose not to publish or record in their lifetime released after they pass. How many out takes from dead rock stars do we need to be subjected to? How many poorly sketched out songs finished by studio musicians and why release a books worth of privately exchanged love notes?

Again..I write this with very mixed emotions because there is certainly some brilliant Carlin here and Sally isn't a pretender but his true love... but it seems every time I get a smile by reading a note I'm confronted by something I feel I really shouldn't be reading. I also think it should carry a shared writing credit for obvious reasons...and he should be on the author page...but there may be legal or financial reasons that this is the way it is and that creates discomfort again for me. As an author very proud of his work I just can't believe George Carlin would want this work published...

"The George Carlin Letters: The Permanent Courtship of Sally Wade" by Sally Wade is an amazingly honest and breathtakingly beautiful portrait of the powerful and intimate love story between Sally Wade and George Carlin. Through words, pictures, handwritten notes, humor and candor, Sally Wade's book brings George Carlin's personality to life, revealing the personal, gentle and loving tenderness of one of the greatest voices of our time. After reading several pages and passages from the book, I found myself in tears, longing for my love, deeply saddened by the loss of George Carlin's incredible life and devastated for Sally Wade's loss of George Carlin's love. I shared the book to my husband, only to see him wipe away his tears.

"The George Carlin Letters: The Permanent Courtship of Sally Wade" is the greatest tribute of love to George Carlin! Not only is this book a gift for George Carlin's Fans, but it is a "must read" for everyone and a work of art from George and Sally to all lovers. It is an intimate portrait of true love that shows us all how to use humor, romance, passion, patience and grace in love.

I give "The George Carlin Letters: The Permanent Courtship of Sally Wade" the highest recommendation! Stars and more stars... all the way to Jupiter!

1.0 out of 5 stars For voyeurs only June 30, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This isn't a book of collected "letters and artwork" of the late, great George Carlin. It's a mass of hundreds of Post-it notes and doodles he made for his second wife, Sally Wade. Included with these are overly precious anecdotes about his life
with Wade and their dog, Spot, and, to fill out the book, photos of the dog, reproductions of postcards, and blurry photographs
of Carlin. It's lovely that Mr. Carlin wrote these little love notes to his second wife in his later years, but seeing them
reprinted here makes for an uncomfortable experience. Were these notes meant to be shared with the public? Is that really what
Carlin intended? There's something exploitative about it, as if Wade had searched for some unpublished work of Carlin's to be
released posthumously, couldn't find any, so gathered up his intimate correspondence and published that instead.

The most touching part of the book? In the first few pages, Wade reveals that Carlin met her some eight months after his
first wife's death, and arranged a date with her four months in advance. The reason for this was that he felt it proper that
he complete a full year of mourning for his wife before beginning a new relationship. Knowing that makes up (almost) for the
endless display of private love memos that follow. It's nice to know that Carlin had someone with whom to share his final
years, especially since, according to several people who knew him well, he was devastated by the death of his first wife.
Maybe that's why these notes to his second wife, especially those in which he professes that she's the "love of his life," ect., come off as embarrassingly smug and self-congratulatory on her part.

The overall result is
a book that gives the reader the sensation of rummaging through someone's private effluvia--an unpleasantly voyeuristic feeling. Sorry, George.
