Editorial Reviews

The vital role and responsibilities of the nursing assistant are documented in this video filmed in a nursing home. In a series of interviews, several nursing assistants explain that because they have the most on-going daily contact with residents they effectively act as “the eyes” of the health professional team.

As the “eyes” of the team, they’re always looking for physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. They look for skin breakdown, beginning of pressure sores and changes in vital signs, appetite, sleep patterns and activity level. Emotional and cognitive change as well as sudden onset of confusion is also on their radar. As any of these changes can indicate a significant health problem or a poor response to a newly prescribed medication, nursing assistants need to know each resident well. The team depends on their ability to observe these changes and to report them.

This DVD provides the opportunity for peer to peer training, with nursing assistants sharing specific details on the importance of their role and what changes they must observe as they provide daily care.
