Great guide to anyone considering the purchase of a German Shepherd. The information is valuable to any dog owner, really, but with a focus on the breed you get insight into the history of the German Shepherd, health concerns you should be aware of, and what you need to know to select the right dog for your family. It covers everything from the puppy stages to training and beyond, and everything is clearly explained and easy to understand. It's obvious from reading that Debbie Ray has a wealth of knowledge and experience with dogs, particularly this breed, and I learned a lot.

We have been considering getting another dog and the German Shepherd is on the list of breeds we are interested in. I learned quite a bit from this guide; for example that Alsatian is another name for the GSD (I always thought that was some sort of husky!). The book starts off with the history of the breed and then goes into what you should look for when selecting a breeder and the importance of getting your new puppy socialized, but then it goes into important things like issues the breed can sometimes have like epilepsy. The part I liked the best was about training them for things like flyball and agility. Flyball looks like a ton of fun. I would recommend this guide to anyone thinking of getting a German Shepherd!

This book was very interesting. I have never owned a German Shepherd but have always been interested in them.

Besides giving information just about the German Shepherd breed there was much information for people who own other breeds. The tip about Listerine was very interesting. Something I did not know but plan to use myself sometime. No I will not tell here what it was. Read the book to find out.

Some of the points made about boredom made me think about my past dogs and wonder if I should have done things differently. A couple of tips I will be passing on to my granddaughter for her to use with her pug.

It is a book that I will go back to for information at a later date.

Debbie Ray has clearly worked with German Shepherd Dogs (GSD) over many years. I am up to number four. This book gave me much new insight into these dogs. She is unusually objective about the utter joys of these pooches, but as well, the downsides and cautions.

A prospective owner should read her book carefully and think about her discussions. A GSD has a fabulous personality with complex skills. They require more attention due to their great intelligence, high energy, extroverted nature, sensitivity, and dedication to their owners. They couple this with some stubbornness, a real attention to a regular schedule, some shedding year round and a major shed in spring and fall. Debby discusses this clearly.

This dog is not too good for a first pet. However, they are excellent with children. A GSD is a real people dog, and is not nearly as well oriented to other dogs. They will play with them, and get along, but tend more to ignore other dogs, especially little yapping beasts, in favor of people (at least mine have).

We selected ours by visiting seven different breeders, talked to a local German Shepherd Dog club, and visited a number of dog shows. We wanted to meet both parents, get an idea of the nature of handling of the puppies as they grow up. I should note that American breeders tend to select a more esthetic set of characteristics and European more working characteristics. A dog that shows really well may not be the most healthy, nor the best companion. Over breeding and puppy mills have done a lot of damage to this breed.

Debbie Ray covers these topics honestly in this book. I highly recommend a study of it. I love my GSD.

If you are trying to decide whether to get a German Shepherd, or if you already have one, this is the book for you. It is a very comprehensive guide. It covers all you need to know during the dog's puppy-hood, his medical needs, and how to live with an aging German Shepherd. The book also covers the different coat colors that are available, how to feed your dog, how to train him, and even how to play with him. The book also tells where you can find your new puppy.

This book is a simply amazing wealth of information about German Shepherd Dogs. Our family has been considering getting a GSD and have a lot of questions because we've never had a big dog. This resource is wonderful because it tells me every I could ever need about them through all cycles of their life. This makes making a decision on getting a dog a lot easier. Thanks Debbie for this helpful and informative guide and for sharing your love and knowledge of German Shepherd Dogs!
