My nephew is a Civil War (especially Gettysburg) enthusiast. We decided to visit and take a bus tour so that all of us could understand the history of the area.

Well, our choices were: $28 per person for 2 hours in a bus (with no hop on/hop off privileges) or a car full (1-5 people) for $55 where you get a private tour guide IN YOUR CAR -- that is, if one happens to show up and be available for you that day (otherwise advance reservations are needed for that).

So, for the price of $30 we bought this package in the visitor center book store. BEST DECISION EVER -- it took us a little over 3 hours (at the price of $7.50 per person ($30) vs. the total of $112 for 4 of us by bus for 2 hours or $55 by car w/guide) to cover the route. We were able to stop when we wanted, absorb what we wanted and move at our own pace (and we each had a window seat). When the hard rains started, we simply "waited it out" and then once again proceeded so we could get out and take pictures in dry weather.

The tape was perfectly timed for the drive from point to point (which was well-marked on the streets). You started at "Day 1" and proceeded through the battles to "Day 3". When you arrived at the clearly marked "auto tour stop" you got even more info with sound effects. If you needed to bypass a section, you simply drove to the next stop (or stop of your preference) and proceeded to click on the coinciding track on the cd). A window clingy also is included for your window so that other cars know you will be making frequent stops (from the sound in the air, we weren't the only ones with this idea of using the cd and creating our own tour).

My spouse and I bought and used this auto tour yesterday in Gettysburg. There were many at the gift shop to decide on, and not knowing which to choose we looked through and decided on this one. We liked that there were various tour 'versions' so to speak -- short, medium, and long/full lengths PLUS the book listed the CD number (there are 3) and track number so you could customize your trip.

For example, we decided to go through Day 1 of the battle and then break for lunch in downtown Gettysburg and then picked up to where we left off, and it was a breeze doing so. Another, more expensive book/CD combo didn't seem to have the track numbers listed, so it may have been difficult to do this. We also took a ranger walk to Cemetery Ridge, so we skipped over that part in the auto tour to spend more time exploring other areas we were interested in.

My spouse is very knowledgeable in Civil War history and Gettysburg and I'm a novice, just getting into the history and battles in the past couple of years. This tour offered the history and details a newbie like myself would need and also offered some unique stories that my spouse had never heard (human interest pieces that give life and color to those that lived in the area, and details about specific men to help us identify with these individuals better).

Like another reviewer mentioned, there is a guided tour option where a guide does drive your car and does provide stops to get out and talk about the history/interpret it for 2hrs (now $65 for up to 6 people) and a bus option ($30 a person). We did encounter many of these guides and they were very informative and very nice, even to us who didn't purchase this option.

We are just back from a weekend at Gettysburg. We used this auto audio tour and it was fantastic. It is well described, very accessible, beautifully narrated and effective. It is 3 CD's. You play some tracks while you are driving and some while you are stopped at marked stops. The Visitor Center has an option to take a bus tour that has two stops where you get out but I prefer the freedom to do this at our own pace. We did the full tour and made a number of stops along the way where we got out, took pictures, walked around, etc. It took us about 5 hours to complete as we did it which makes for a lovely day. We supplemented it with viewing the movie at the visitor center, taking a couple of ranger walks plus a Segway tour all of which added up to a great weekend. I highly recommend.

This audio book was very helpful in my understanding of the battles at Gettysburg. It really helped me paint a better picture of what occurred there in July of 1863. I even find myself listening to the audio tour back home in Maryland and I can still remember the location in Gettysburg of the specific battles that are being talked about. I never had a personal tour guide for the battlefields, but I feel that this audio tour is just as good. Highly recommended to bring for your tour at Gettysburg.

Just drive to the welcome center, spend some time looking around there, then pop in the CD as all the tours leave from there.
It is detailed, and easy to follow.
