I was surprised to see well over half the comic in color!

Shunned by some people as a confusing and strange combination of cyberworld theory and endless panty shots, Ghost in the Shell 2 is a strange beast. But if you're into hypernetworked technology, you'll love this book. I find myself staring at network images and user interface elements and thinking "THAT will actually be real in 2035," which is when the book is based. So if you think in terms of networks and systems and all the different ways we will be using and seeing them, you will like this book a lot.

The story was totally convoluted and seemed like it was only really there as an excuse to string all the cool pictures together. But after a few reads I finally got it, and this finally hammered in the missing piece in my understanding of Shirow's vision of an all-encompassing digital network which is rapidly becoming the world we live in.

What I wish for now is a full book on Shirow's ideas of the future. He is thinking on a level beyond most scientists, philosophers, criminologists, and technologists. He is thinking of a world that is a natural extension of our world. These thoughts are riddled throughout the story and in notes on the bottom and sides of numerous pages. He casually mentions very profound things in passing, like about networked electrical systems for homes and how digital communication is "seen." One of his more popular concepts is about how cybernetic implants have benefits but complications, such as bugs, virus attacks, false memories, and hacks of everything from mental control to body motion. Most of these things are found in the Ghost in the Shell movies, television anime, and other comics (GITS 1 and 1.5) but are really given the full treatment in this book.

But then again, you have to deal with all the panty shots. Like, two or three per page, for 200 or so pages. Now if you're into that, plus all the stuff I just ranted about above, then you are REALLY going to like this book.

The presentation and style of this book reads like a continuous graphic novel and I think it is supposed to take place all within a day or two. It is deeply philosophical and technology abounds throughout the story. My only complaint is the relative lack of military action with guns and mecha compared with the first volume, but this is a different type of story and a different perspective of cyber warfare, which is significantly more intense. Less guns, but more "intellectual" insight. It didn't fail me however, and I doubt it would any fan of the Ghost in the Shell franchise.

As the author says in the introduction of the book, he decided to take a visually different approach on this one, to make sure it's not just more stories about section 9.

So if you expect to see another installment of the first serie, or the intermediate serie (GITS 1.5), you might get disapointed.

Agood part of the action here is taken on a virtual reality, with nude female characters floating around on a cyber-dreamlike-virtual world. It looks good, but none of it really adds to the plot.

There are some pretty good action in it too, but too much of cyber-world-of-make-believe for my taste.

This is only for the hardest of the hardcore fans. This thing was confusing to start with and towards the end actually got more confusing somehow. I THINK that was a cliffhanger ending but I can't even be sure I didn't just miss (or misunderstand) something.

A crazy amount of up-skirts and crotch shots from more angles than I thought possible. If that's your thing the book has that.

Ghost in the Shell 2 is the almost entirely full color (maybe 20% is in black and white) sequel to the hit 80s manga. It follows a beautiful cyborg freelancer as she sheds bodies and identities in various missions.

It starts off with some high concept science fiction set in a world where brains can be hacked and pirated and cyborgs can jump from body to body like a program being copied. It's wonderful mind-blowing stuff.

And the art, a mixture of hand-drawn and digital graphics with vibrant colors and Shirow Masamume's trademark sexy women is a treat.

But as the story grows more philosophical and esoteric it lost me. By the end I had little idea what was going on and cared even less. Perhaps the translators are at fault, or maybe I'm missing something but this book took me ages to read because it just fell off the rails halfway through.

Ditto'ing the other reviews; this sequel is not quite a sequel, and is hard to follow. It pretty much differs from GitS 1 in every way to include story, art style (over a decade between releases) and even the chars.

I was surprised to see well over half the comic in color! AND is by no means a small book.

Shirow's mind is on an entirely different level when it comes to creating an intricate futaristic cyberworld. What I like about him is that he puts a lot of extra effort into explaining these futaristic Sci-Fi scenes and what is going through his head. (i.e. captions explaing certain scenes like why motoko said ___ or why her body is in place ___ or Shirow explaining what acronym ___ means).

This is what makes GitS; it is mentally stimulating and, if not familiar with the GitS or underestimate the series, is down-right confusing. Though not for a casual reader *myself*, I don't have a problem just staring at the art while I read and re-read to understand what Shirow is thinking.
