5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a beginner! August 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I received this book and read it front to back in one sitting. I learned a lot, but it was more like chatting with a friend than reading a textbook. Gave me tons of motivation and an awesome program schedule to fit my current needs, AND schedules for when I get better/faster.

Thanks for writing a book that didn't make me feel like a slow, fat, lazy, looser. And thanks for writing it so that even a slow, fat, lazy, looser can feel motivated and inspired!

(I literally ran from the living room to the kitchen about 10 times after reading it...I was so anxious to get started!) Haha!

I came across Mark (@wise_running) on twitter and found his daily tweets and blog (http://wiserunning.com) to be a good source of inspiration, information and motivation.

I have 2 problems with this book, oddly, both of which are reasons to get it.

Problem #1
This book should have been written 3 years ago when I started running. If you are new to running or thinking about running - this is the book you need to read. You will save a lot of time, money and soreness. Mark speaks to many of the issues I ran into when I first started, if I had this book as a guide, my start would have been much smoother and probably saved me from injury.

If you are already a runner this book might help you reconnect with why you started running or remind you of a few training items you forgot along the way. For the last several years I have sought out information on my own and developed my own plans. Reading this book reminded me of some of the items that I discarded as I adopted new plans and techniques, I am now going to try and add those back in.

Problem #2
I was at the end of the book far too quickly. This book is a quick read, I would suggest reading with a highlighter nearby. There is a lot of good information to come back to as well as some great quotes to help keep you motivated. I certainly hope Mark decides to go for volume 2.

Bottom line, I enjoyed reading this book and found it helpful. When I was done and put the book down at 10 pm my first thought was to lace up and go for a run.

Happy running and welcome new runners!

5.0 out of 5 stars Walker Thinks About Running July 28, 2012
By G. REED
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
You may wonder why a self-proclaimed walker would buy a book called The Gift of Running. 1. I personally know the author as we live in the same town and attend the same races. 2. The thought of running is always lingering in the back of my mind, I am just not ready yet.

If there is a book on the market that will get me ready to run and excited about it, it is this one. This book makes me want to get out and try running. In that I know the author, I know that he lives and breathes running. He is not saying one thing and doing another - he believes every word he wrote. He talks about repeats, intervals, tempo runs, etc.

Are you an experienced runner? I am sure you will find some new tips and tricks and enjoy the stories that the author shares. Are you a newbie runner or a current walker (like myself)? Pick this book up and read it. Then re-read it again. The author shares training plans for all levels and different length races.

If you are a runner or are thinking about running, I encourage you to buy the book. It is a great read. Tons of information. It is motivational and encouraging. And this walker might just become a runner.
