The poetry of a song has a personal meaning to every individual listener. The beauty of the melody and chord progression speaks for itself. For me, the first verse touches on the deep pain I carried in my early years because of my sexuality; "take this overcoat of shame...it never did belong to me." It spoke to me in my very early twenties...it speaks to me now, even deeper in my forties, in a completely different way. I can look back in love and see the mixed up kid I was. The second verse...about coming to terms with my the reality that what I thought I wanted in life...just wasn't really what I needed. "I need to go outside...I need to leave the smoke". I didn't achieve the dreams of musical success that I wanted so badly, my life has taken on a different kind of twist. Now I achieved A LOT of them, and when you get right down to it, the rain still feels so good! "So let's go out in the rain again...just like you said we always would." And my mother, who gave me the gift of life, has loved and accepted me for the entire journey. Annie's voice has always carried a feeling of the maternal in it to my ears, on the slower pieces, as soothing as a lullaby. So. As hard as it is to translate music into words,( and this is almost too personal-I hesitated posting it) that's what the song means to me.
