Book Description

February 26, 2011
Paul VanDerMere is looking forward to a summer of canoeing, swimming, and hanging out with his dad at their lakeside cabin in the woods. At first, the only thing getting in the way of his enjoyment is his stepbrother Jasper. But when Paul and Jasper are canoeing back from a small, uninhabited island on the lake, Paul glances back and sees a young girl staring back at him. He's not even sure if he saw her – was she real, or an apparition?
He's soon drawn in to the unsettling mystery of a strange girl who randomly appears and disappears from the island. When he hears a local ghost story about a young girl just like her, he begins to wonder if he's dealing with a real person… or something entirely different.

EXCERPT

As I pushed away from the island, I turned around to take one last look, and almost dropped the paddle.

Sticking out from the thick foliage was a girl’s head and shoulders. She looked about eight or nine years old, with shoulder-length, brown hair pulled into braids at the sides of her head. Her eyes were dark and fierce, and they glared at me as she held her finger up to her lips. The message was clear: ‘Don’t tell.’

And then she disappeared.

My whole body jerked. I blinked a few times, letting the canoe drift around.

“Hey, Paul?” Jasper asked. “Uh, I think we’re drifting...”

My heart beating in staccato, I gave myself a shake and began to paddle again. Had I really just seen that?

I looked back one more time. There was nothing there. But then, after a second or two, the face poked out once more, eyes still intense and glaring. This time, she pointed: you.

Me, what?

She disappeared again.

Dumbly, I turned and paddled away, like I’d been ordered to leave and was obeying like a zombie. Well, a zombie with its heart going like a jackhammer. As I slid the paddle through the slippery water, the reason I gave myself for not going back to investigate was that then I’d have to explain it to Jasper, whereas the girl’s message had been clear: don’t tell.

But really, I think the reason I paddled away so quickly was that I was completely spooked. The girl was creepy-looking, almost surreal. What had I just seen?

Too many typos and holes. April 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This "book" was not worth the money I spent on it. It is a prime example of the lack of editing that goes into books that go straight to Kindle. The story starts out as a fairly good ghost story told through the eyes of a 14 year old boy. As the plot unfolds, the story winds up with many holes - such as the "ghost" being so young she couldn't be that other girl, yet later she is? The last half of the book sounds like the immature rantings and ravings of a 14 year old as he gets upset with his stepbrother. The author tries to tie it up with a decent ending, but the entire story just left me unimpressed. There were also plenty of typos.

Loved it! April 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Another excellent Jodi Kihara novel! Spine-tingling and hard to put down, with a very exciting climax! The main character Paul is totally believable and lovable: while solving a mystery of The Girl who keeps appearing on the island (could she be a ghost??), he struggles to come to terms with sharing his dad with his new step-brother. It's a great novel for mid-grade, and it's just a shame that it had to end.

Good YA thriller March 13, 2011

This is an exciting book that pulled me in right away and kept me turning the pages. There were some parts where I really couldn't put the book down. And there was a twist in the plot that I totally didn't see coming - but should have!
Nice to have a male main character in a Young Adult book for a change. Actually most of the characters are male - this is definitely a good 'boy book'(although girls would enjoy it too).
Great characters, great descriptions, and 1 or 2 really funny parts too.
I definitely recommend this!

"I cannot recommend this one enough... the story will pull you in and not let you go till the very end."

"The strength of the MC, Alia, is amazing; I found her to be refreshing and empowering."

"The scenes were so vivid! I was transported to the point where I could feel the heavy heat of the desert sun beating down, or the parched state of the travellers as the water from the skin bottles trickled to a stop. I heard the zing of the swords, the echoing of the horse's hoof steps against the palace walls, and the guttural shouts of the men in their foreign tongues."

"It felt like I'd travelled back in time. It was so very vibrant that I could feel it, feel the book, the place, the people... I loved every page, every moment."

"I loved, loved, loved The Frankincense Trail. It was unlike anything I'd read before. Once I'd finished, I just wanted to dive back into the story."
"I will count this book as one of my favourites for this year."
