Book Description

The fate of her world depends on his happiness...

Toby threw up his hands. "Why me?"

“We have all asked that question at one time or another.”

“Oh sure!” Toby said. “As in, ‘I stubbed my toe – why me?’ or ‘I got a parking ticket – why me?’ But not, ‘My feelings bring rain and earthquakes to an entire world that lives in my stationery cupboard – why sodding me?’"

On the night of a disastrous marriage proposal, miserable thirty-something Toby finds feisty teenager Sophia trapped in his office stationery cupboard.

Her treetop village is under threat from child-snatching monsters, and an outcast old seer believes Toby has an incredible latent power over their land and wildlife. Their survival depends upon his happiness – but with Sophia’s savage boyfriend and sceptical best mate in tow, finding happiness won’t be easy.

About the Author

From around about the age of thirteen, when one particularly inspiring English teacher recognised that Rob "really enjoys writing this fantasy stuff", he knew that he would always be a writer.

Studying the craft of English Literature and Creative Writing to the highest level through school, he graduated from Bath Spa University in 2000 with a first class degree in those subjects.

Twenty years after that English teacher said those words, Rob kept writing because it is impossible for a writer to stop writing. But with numerous fantasy, horror, science fiction, magic realism and literary fiction stories under his belt, in late 2012 he'd had his fill of generic rejection letters from agents and editors, and took the plunge into the murky waters of self-publishing via the current hot medium of the e-book. "The Girl in the Stationery Cupboard" was released upon an unsuspecting world, and a print edition followed to broaden its audience.

Rob lives in Bristol, England, with his wife and energetic toddler. They have inspired in him a love for romance and all that soppy stuff - but his passion for fantasy, magic and all things beyond the mundane remains as keen as ever, and continues to fuel his writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun flight of fantasy May 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoy finding new authors. I am happy to say that I was not disappointed by this book.

Rob Chilcott creates an interesting situation for Toby, the hero of this tale. Stuck in a dull job, living at home with his overbearing, and oversexed, mother, and having just botched his proposal of marriage to the woman his mother thinks he should marry, Toby sees himself as a complete loser. Seeking solace in his empty office he discovers an odd young woman in the supply room.

Sophia is unlike anyone Toby has ever met. Soaking wet and wearing a dress that is made of leaves, Sophia declares that she has seen Toby in her dreams and that he is destined to save her people from a terrible creature. After a brief misadventure in Toby's world - London - Sophia leads her disbelieving hero through a portal in the stationery closet to a world unlike anything he could ever imagine

Rob Chilcott created a very interesting alternate world and its inhabitants for his hero to visit. Sophia and her people are quite well developed characters, and Chilcott's descriptions of their world paint a vivid picture for the reader. Toby is a very relatable character, a modern man approaching middle age, feeling stuck in his job, insecure, and going along doing what he thinks he should do. His travels in Sophia's world seem to awaken a part of himself he never knew existed.

To sum up, this is a very enjoyable read, and well worth the purchase. I found it difficult to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Harry Potter for Adults, but better. February 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book is well written and starts to pull you into the story from page one. In a way, it reminds me of one of my favorite online comics, Erfworld, where a lovable loser nerd gets pulled into a different world with different rules.

If you read to escape the stresses of daily life, this is exactly the perfect kind of book for you.

Give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shining example of fantasy fiction July 14, 2013

As something of a newbie to fantasy, I thought this looked interesting despite the fantasy label (I've read some dubious 'fantasy' books in the past, unfortunately) but I can honestly say that I enjoyed this book more than I've enjoyed any book for a long time. It really grabs you and won't let go til it's finished! Highly recommended (ps, I'm a woman!).
