Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A series of murders committed by women in Chicago in the 1920s provide juicy material for drama in this racy history, as well as the musical. Perry paints a vividly detailed picture of the events with a range of viewpoints, from interviews with the murderers to police reports. Peter Berkrot has a deep and projecting voice that's easy to follow and enjoy. He handles the straightforward narrative smoothly, using pause and emphasis to highlight more important passages. If his female voices require more work, he excels at quoting newspapers and other firsthand accounts, cleverly mimicking their sensationalized, breathless tone. A Viking hardcover (Reviews, Apr. 12). The Girls of Murder City

Douglas Perry is an award-winning writer and editor. This book tells about Maurine Watkins, a reporter for the `Chicago Tribune', and the author of the play "Chicago", which is based on true crimes. It describes part of the culture of Chicago in the 1920s when Prohibition was in effect and gangs fought to produce or sell alcohol. Perry writes well about long-forgotten murderesses and their cases. These stories are interesting and readable. There are notes for each of the twenty chapters and Epilogue, and three pages of Bibliography (whose books may be hard to find today). Then all-male juries would not convict an attractive young woman for murder. It was different for minorities and lower-class women. [Does this still happen today?] Given the rarity of murders by young women its hard to tell. One question was the increase of such murders in 1920s Chicago. [Was the little sister in Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" based on Beulah Annan?]

Prohibition was supposed to end drinking and crime and increase prosperity; it had the opposite effect (p.70). Corruption and crime expanded. Does beauty equate to innocence (p.72)? [See some TV shows.] Page 75 explains why any prisoner should not talk to a reporter: a conflict of interest. And why you shouldn't believe everything you read. Chapter 10 and 11 tell of a brilliant student who got involved with a bad crowd. [Does this still happen?] Chapters 12 to 15 describe the trial of Titian-haired Beulah Annan; not guilty. (Roxie Hart in "Chicago"). Watkins correctly surmised that Leopold and Loeb could have done it (Chapter 16). Belva's lawyer said the state failed to make a case; the jury agreed (Chapter 17). [Perry, like Watkins, missed the reality behind these events.

Very informative and the author writes with prose. It doesn't read like an encyclopedia. If you want to learn about the bad girls of Chicago during the 1930s, the ones that inspired CHICAGO (the musical), this book comes with my recommendation.
