Book Description

November 13, 2011
One of the most profound influences of globalisation is that people from everywhere are falling in love with people from everywhere else. The Globalisation of Love is about the whirls and twirls, the quirks and perks, the frustrations and the fun of a multicultural relationship. Multicultural couples have all the issues that exist in monocultural relationships, plus whatever colourful combination of culture, language, religion and ethnicity the couple bring into their marriage. Based on interviews with multicultural couples from around the world, The Globalisation of Love shows how they meet and fall in love, how they choose a country to live in, what happens in bilingual and trilingual families, how they deal with multicultural kids and careers, the consequences of having a family that looks like a mini-United Nations, how to laugh about cultural clashes that make you cry, how to share in prayer around the world, what is done for the holidays, what is cooking in the multicultural kitchen and even who is cooking it. There is a world of multicultural romance happening out there and it is all captured in The Globalisation of Love.

Review

REVIEW 1 " - like taking a course titled 'We Are the World' taught by a cultural anthropologist, a marriage therapist, and a talk show host all rolled into one. With knowledge, wisdom, and humour, Wendy helps us learn and laugh as she encourages us to chart our own paths to lasting multicultural love."
Joel Crohn, PhD, Author of Mixed Matches: How to Create Successful Interracial, Interethnic, and Interfaith Relationships REVIEW 2: " - an astute and entertaining look at love across cultures. If I had a GloLo partner I'd want smart, funny Wendy Williams as my new best friend." Terri A Karis, PhD Professor of Couple and Family Therapy, University of Wisconsin-Stout. Editor of Intercultural Couples: Exploring Diversity in Intimate Relationships REVIEW 3: " - a breezy, light-hearted, gossipy (but wise) take on many of the serious aspects of the globalisation of love. She makes it all sound like such fun that it may even cause a break-out of marriages across cultures." Dugan Romano, Author of Intercultural Marriage: Promises and Pitfalls

5.0 out of 5 stars Globalisation of Love November 17, 2011
Format:Paperback
Canadian Author Wendy Williams has written a highly evocative, yet humorous guide to relationships that cross all frontiers. And given the fact she's married to an Austrian and now living in Vienna, she's certainly no stranger to the concept of mixed marriage herself.

With increasing numbers of people moving around the globe to live and work, love now overcomes barriers like never before and blended unions in all their forms are now everywhere we look.

With amusing anecdotes and witty repartee throughout, Williams has succeeded in writing something that is both enlightening and amusing.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars That's my story!! December 15, 2011
Format:Paperback
As an American married to a Dutch man for many years, I long ago realized that this was not a `normal` marriage and Wendy Williams put her finger on the reason - many many times. While laughing out loud at her witty remarks and sweet stories, I saw myself and my relationship over and over again in this `can't wait for the next topic' book. Wendy applied her research background to skillfully categorize the numerous interviews she conducted and then packaged the findings in an approachable, humorous, incredibly clever book. I am giving copies to all the GloLo friends and I recommend this to anyone who has dipped into the diversity pool and found a partner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, entertaining and useful November 22, 2011
Format:Paperback
Wendy Williams has captured the essence of a mixed partnership - be it due to race, religion, geography, language or culture. I laughed, smiled, got tears in my eyes and nodded with recognition (I'm Swedish, married to an Austrian) throughout the book. Reading this book is a must for those of you who are just entering a mixed partnership - whether you are at the level of getting to know, dating or preparing to marry. It is also for those of you who are already in a mixed partnership. If you haven't made all the experiences Wendy writes about, it is just a matter of time before you encounter them. The book is also very enlightening for those of you who have mixed partnerships amoung your friends or family, e.g. for parents who are about to see their son or daughter "leaving" for a foreign country / religion / culture to settle down with their loved one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must reading for multicultural couples January 21, 2013
By Annette
Format:Paperback
I just loved this book and highly recommend it to multicultural couples, and even their families and friends. The book discusses most of the big cultural issues and demonstrates that intercultural couples probably have more things to deal with, such as culture, religion and even travelling for the holidays. Yet the book is written in such an easy and positive style. It is fun to read and makes me feel proud to be in a multicultural family. The author covers the subjects respectfully. I highlighted many sections and read it together with my husband. We were both appreciative for the understanding and insight. Reading this book helped us to understand each other better as a multicultural couple. It is definitely 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars GloLo - the inadvertent ambassadors for World Peace October 5, 2012
By Aneesah
Format:Paperback
Reading a blurb on The Globalisation of Love, I felt an instant curiosity and interest - and just adored the utopian, all-embracing phrase: "people from everywhere are falling in love with people from everywhere else".

Excited by the many questions that came to mind and glancing through the table of contents, there was to me an implicit promise of answers on issues such as religion, language, family and location, location, location. Wendy Williams shows a passion for wordplay and who's to say, perhaps the term GloLo, referencing multicultural relationships, will indeed catch on. Readers are offered the distinction between same-same, different-different and same but different relationships. I was inspired to draw up my own personal GloLo Profile, worked out that I am in a different-different relationship and even had fun drawing up my very own top 10 clues that I am in a GloLo relationship.

Occasionally I had the impression that I was reading bits from my language and linguistics course or one or other of my social studies textbooks. But all in all, the author's wit and humor as she shares rich and colourful anecdotes makes The Globalisation of Love a worthy read.

Reading through is very much like being in a multicultural relationship with all its whirls and twirls, quirks and perks, frustration and fun. It will do you well to follow the author's advice and let go of certain expectations. I particularly enjoyed the many top 10 lists. When I noticed that Heidi Klum and Seal topped the Top 10 GloLo Celebrity Couples, (a topper that dissolved by the time this second edition went to press in Great Britain), I had to smile wondering what humor Wendy would bring to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it! March 4, 2012
By Tiger
Format:Paperback
A funny, witty and sometimes moving overview of the laughter and tears that go along with a multicultural relationship. It was both fun and informative to read and I began to see my own global family in a new perspective. We're different from the other couples on the street, but we're also special - we're GloLo! The book is well researched but avoids sounding academic. It is laugh-out-loud yet avoids being frivolous. I would recommend this book to anyone in a multicultural relationship and family. Try the GloLoTini cocktail recipe on page 73 and toast to the globalisation of your love.
