The Heavy - How You Like Me Now (Live at Amazon)

“What the hell were we thinking?,” exclaims Dan Taylor, guitarist for U.K. indie soul-rock titans The Heavy, of the band’s audacious new album, The Glorious Dead, to be released on Counter/Ninja Tune on [date TK]. “We wanted to make a bold statement – it’s not shy, but a beast unto itself.” “It’s over the top, but in a good way,” adds ... Editorial Reviews

Renegade English soul-rockers The Heavy are happy to announce the release of their new album, The Glorious Dead, on August 21 via Counter Records/Ninja Tune. The Glorious Dead is the band's third full-length LP, and the follow-up to their acclaimed sophomore record The House That Dirt Built (2009). Self-produced and with their unique, raw eclecticism fully intact, it's their most fully-realized record yet, mixing together soul, hip hop, rock, blues and funk into glorious, raucous party music that is equally full of heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Their Best Yet August 23, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The Heavy sprung to the mainstream conscious with their infectious hit "How You Like Me Now?" Their new album, THE GLORIOUS DEAD, may be better than their previous album, THE HOUSE THAT DIRT BUILT. THE GLORIOUS DEAD is 10 tracks of nonstop funk, soul, and rock-n-roll. It's dirty, rough, and passionate -- there's not a stinker on this album.

The British band's album begins with one of its best tracks: "Can't Play Dead." It's a dark, sweaty, rocker that settles into a groove that seems endless. "Curse Me Good" uses a little more Mo-Town in its influences. THE GLORIOUS DEAD's lead single, "What Makes a Good Man?" wouldn't feel out of place in a Black Keys album -- it's back up harmonies propel the song to a stand-out hit. "Same 'Ol" swaggers back and forth with his downtempo and heavy procession. The music on this record is phenomenal -- the brass horns feel ready to explode, the drums are getting the hell beat out of them, and the guitarwork varies from the bluesy to the frantic. Kelvin Swalby's vocals are often a highlight: his gritty and soulful voice often draw comparisons to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and for good reason. His worn-in vocals give these songs a nice, comfortable feeling.

The Heavy's GLORIOUS DEAD is a victory-lap for the band -- anyone who enjoyed their last album ought to love this one. Fans of The Black Keys would do well to seek this band out as well -- The Heavy aren't quite as lo-fi as the Black Keys, and their music is a bit sweatier and grittier. Essential tracks to sample/download include: "Same Ol'," "Can't Play Dead," and "What Makes A Good Man?"

4.0 out of 5 stars amazing August 31, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Just saw them on Letterman, wow , Dave got them to do a bit of "How You Like Me Now" at one point, as he sings or shouts "How You Like Me Now" Letterman is in the microphone answering "I Love You", I was counting how many people in the band. For us old folks its some what the party music of James Brown and The Flames.
THIS IS PARTY MUSIC, on the impromtu version of "How You.." I think Pauls Horn section added some additional blast, I loved it, took me back to that hard rock era wow.... I just put this out here I got a late dinner gone cold I am so blown away by this sound takes me back to my youth,I totally dig Letterman's excitement, this was written 10 mins. after performance. IT ROCKS

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Funk Neo-Soul August 21, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
The Heavy blends retro-soul, R&B, funk and garage rock to produce an awesome musical stew. If you're up for a sweaty, groovy, musical workout, this is the album for you. They hit on a lot of genres without ever sounding inauthentic. Highly recommended for fans of The Black Keys, Raphael Saadiq, or Gnarls Barkley.

I was absolutely blown away when I first sampled the album on Amazon. I was actually just checking the status of an order, when I noticed a little 25% coupon pop up on my screen for this album by this band that I had never heard of I HAD to hear the entire thing(via The Pirate Bay...don't judge!), and I enjoyed the album SO much I literally listened to it about 3 or 4 times in a row. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't support this incredibly diverse and freshly funky group, The Heavy, if I had not purchased it. And lucky for me (being a HUGE collector) "The Gorgeous Dead" was also available on vinyl! So I clipped that coupon and ordered it for vinyl (by the way, has the BEST vinyl packaging I've seen!)

As soon as it came, I got a pleasant surprise in the package. First of all, it includes a FREE mp3 download of the album. But what really caught my eye: apparently, on the VINYL version of the album, it comes with not one, but TWO discs. Puzzled, I flipped over the case to look on the back, knowing full well that this barely 40 min long recording should fit on just ONE disc. To my surprise, the second disc contains an "Instrumental" version of the entire album (which for all intents and purposes its really the same exact album, just without the vocals). As beautiful and edgy as the musical accompaniments are throughout, I still cannot really wrap my head around why they would included this. The only thing I could think of would be two utilize both discs on a dual turntable to do boss remixes, which is kind of cool (if you're in to that sort of thing). All I really cared about was the first disc (the actual FINAL cut of the record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected October 7, 2012
By Maureen
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I heard The Heavy on a late night talk show recently. The song was powerful so I figured I could try it expecting that I would only like the one song I heard that evening. I was expecting the whole CD to sound very similar to what I had heard that evening. I was SO wrong. Every song has a different sound. Each song has a story that isn't the 'normal' drivel that you hear on regular radio. The Heavy's music leaves me singing one of their many songs all day when I leave my car to go to work everyday. The Heavy are an amazing group.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic follow-up to House that Dirt Built September 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Honestly, i was a little worried that the success of The House that Dirt Built would make the band a little complacent, and churn out something ultimately forgettable. They've done exactly the opposite and put out what is probably a better album musically. Lots of the same themes, but with a new round of dirty funk and bluesy beats. Best song gem is "What makes a good man". If you liked the previous album, definitely check this out.

Amazing band, amazing album. Why they aren't winning Grammys and aren't a household name is beyond me. A band this talented should be a benchmark for popular music. Read more

I haven't personally purchased the cd from amazon(I thought about buying it off their website), but I've purchased others, and honestly I don't think amazon sells edited cds. Unless it's noted that it is edited. I could be wrong though.
